Program Information

Students in band play wind instruments like the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba, and percussion.

There are three bands at BJH:

Cadet Band

Concert Band

Jazz Band


Cadet Band is for all grade levels and is the beginning band class. Cadet Band performs a few times during the year at concerts.


Concert Band is the advanced band class. Acceptance to this class is by audition. This band performs at concerts, in assemblies, at school and district events, and at band festivals in the spring.


Jazz Band is an audition-only group that meets before school to rehearse. This is an advanced ensemble, where students study jazz music, learn about jazz harmonies and writing, and perform at many events and concerts throughout the year.

There are three performing choirs at BJH:

6th Grade Chorus

Chorus 1

Chorus 2


The 6th Grade Chorus is a beginning level class that is a part of the 6th Grade Elective Wheel. It is an introduction to vocal music and open to all 6th grade students.


Chorus 1 is open to all students 6th through 8th grade. Chorus 1 performs in various concerts throughout the year.


Chorus 2 is the advanced choir class. Acceptance by permission only. This choir performs at concerts, in assemblies, at school and district events, and in choir festivals in the spring.

Bobcat Sounds

This year, the BJH Music department is starting an after-school practice program. The program is free. We will meet after school for one hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the band room to practice music. Some of the opportunities and benefits are:

- One-on-one instruction time

- A safe space to practice

- Dedicated practice time away from at-home distractions

- Small ensembles (like duets, trios, quartets) will be set up

o Small ensembles (like duets, trios, etc.) will have the opportunity to perform the music they learn together in April


Choir Club

This year, the BJH Music department is starting an after-school choir club! The club is free. We will meet after school for one hour on Mondays and Wednesdays in the choir room to sing. Some of the opportunities and benefits are:

- Extra time to sing

- Fun music to learn

- Dedicated practice time away from at-home distractions

- Performance opportunities

Mikayla Black,

Band and Orchestra

Mikayla is from Snohomish Washington, and studied music education at Central Washington University. In addition to working at Bennion, she works with The Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps in Richland Washington and continues to perform regularly with bands, orchestras, and choirs in Utah playing the clarinet, bass clarinet, piano, flute, and trumpet. She is also currently attending the University of Utah for clarinet performance.

Andrew Gompf,

Choir

Andrew is from Mukilteo Washington and studied music education at Central Washington University where he sang in the distinguished Chamber Choir. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the Barbershop Harmony Society, and currently performs with internationally acclaimed ensembles: The Saltaires Barbershop Chorus in Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Vocal Artists.
