Hello, I am James Woolley and I hope to be elected freshman class secretary for the 2026-2027 school year. Why I want this position is a kind of complicated story. Originally when I was running for SBO secretary at bonneville last year it was mostly to just get some recognition but then I joined the peer leadership class this school year. I have come to learn through the activities that we do in peer leadership that helping the student body is a very rewarding job and I want to help do that with student government at cottonwood like my parents and grandparents have done before me. If I get elected I hope to help build community through creative activities and through just being an overall nice person. As I said earlier I have experience doing student government adjacent activities in peer leadership such as helping with the viking night where the incoming sixth graders from Oakwood and Woodstock come to see the building and do fun activities. I hope to represent cottonwood through namely academic skills, I am trying to get half of an associates degree before I graduate and currently cottonwood is the only school in the district offering that program.
Question #1: What are two initiatives you will work on as a Class Officer next year if you are elected?
One of the initiative's that I think would be cool for next year is possibly a content review section at the end of first period, homeroom or 4th period possibly before end of year testing or maybe at the start of the year to make sure that the students memories are sharp enough so that they can succeed on their tests.
The second program that I would think could benefit cottonwood next year is possibly an after school tutoring program that could help people who think they need help in class to sign up and get tutoring from either people who are doing really well in that class or people that sign up for the program.
Question #2: What does it mean to you to be a Colt?
As a third generation Colt I think that just being a normal colt is someone who attends cottonwood high and is able to succeed in their studies. But I think that being a true colt is someone who not only is a regular colt but also builds and strives to build a sense of community inside of cottonwood.
Question #3: What is one way you would develop activities to make everyone at Cottonwood feel welcome and included?
I think that developing activities could be a very fun thing for the student body to help with, so to create new activities I would go around during lunch and interview people to see what might be a popular activity so that that can be refined and used in some capacity.
Question #4: What advice do you have to stay motivated with attendance and academics throughout the year?
My advice to stay motivated with academics is to get help when you need it. If you feel like you are struggling in a class then see if you can get help from a teacher or a friend. To stay focused on attendance my advice is to remember that if you don't get the knowledge now then your future will be worse off. This is another good reason why you should get help if you need it so that you can be better off in the future.
Question #5: What are some qualities that make a great leader?
I think that some of the qualities that make a great leader that make a great leader are first, organization. Being organized can help improve efficiency for not only you but the overall collective. Second, camaraderie. If you don't like the people that you are supposed to be the leader of then you might make decisions that don't benefit them or effect them negatively. Third, supporting the collective. Any time that you make a decision that affects multiple people you should see their opinion on the matter so you can make an informed decision on what the collective wants.
Question #6: What is a leadership quality you have and how will it help you be a good Class Officer at Cottonwood?
The leadership quality that I have that will help me be a good class officer the most is time frame organization. My internal clock and schedule is very important to me and it helps build efficency in both my friend and family groups. This will help benefit cottonwood so that we can have a set schedule and focus our efforts towards planing the big stuff instead of worrying about the timing.
Question #7: What specific qualifications do you have for your intended position?
As you have might have seen in my video my grandpa and mom who are both cottonwood graduates have jobs where organization is critical which is a very important trait for a secretary and some of those traits have been passed onto me and/or can be taught to me. I have also been tasked with jobs in which I would handle money and am therefore somewhat skilled in financial literacy.
I think that the kids that are in cottonwood's language programs (ASL, ESL, Chinese, Spanish) could participate in an assembly in some form. The email that I would send to inform these groups of their possible role in an assembly is this.
Hello language staff,
I have sent you this email to inform you that I would like your class(s) to participate in this next upcoming assembly doing an activity of your choice for the student body. Your class(s) could do a performance, host a game or something else that show off your class(s) skills and maybe what you are learning about right now. Please send me back another email if you want to participate and what activity your class(s) would be doing.
Sincerely,
James Woolley
Homecoming Assembly script
(Quick auditorium etiquette spiel) Dr. Pitcher: Welcome to the homecoming assembly, First things first I would like to introduce our SBO's for this year ( introduces SBO's) they will be conducting the rest of the assembly
SBO president: we will now hear some announcements regarding some of the extracurricular activities happening this first semester and beyond (announcements regarding musical, science clubs, sports, etc)
SBO vice: We will now be playing the step through the hoop game. First we need 9 people from each grade to come up here to the stage. The rules are that after each grade forms its own line hand in hand we will give a hula hoop to the start of the line and then the lines will need to become a circle. Whichever grade gets the most rotations around its circle in 90 seconds wins. ( game 1 happens)
SBO historian: We will now get to see a video slideshow about the first few weeks of school with photos that me and the other historians have taken (Slideshow part 1)
SBO secretary: We will now be playing our second game which is sit down volleyball with 5 people from each grade coming up. It will be Freshman and Seniors vs Sophmores and Juniors. You can move your arms but can't move from the place you are currently sitting. (game 2 happens)
(Slideshow part 2)
SBO communications: We will now be playing our third game which is rainbow road. Three people from each grade will get in a large fabric wheel and race each other to get first place. (game 3 happens)
(Final part of slideshow)
SBO dance: We will now be receiving a performance from the dance groups
(Dance might have some homey/ welcoming feels because this is the homecoming assembly)
Release from assembly.
Task: Create a sample list of groups at Cottonwood that could participate in a school assembly and write a sample email asking if they would like to participate. Additionally, create a simple outline of a Homecoming Assembly script. (Typically the Homecoming Assembly involves competition games between grades and includes a dance performance by the combined dance groups.)
