SECONDARY SUMMER LEARNING

Hello Fabulous SECONDARY FAMILIES!

Are you looking for a fun way to encourage your middle school or high school child's reading this summer? Look no further - we have created the summer resource for you!

How does it work?

Below you will find links to learning activities that your secondary child can do daily throughout the summer. The idea is for your teen to read daily (Bingo) for 30 minutes, work on vocabulary (Free Rice) for 5 minutes, and work on comprehension (Reading Theory) for 5-10 minutes. Next, they can choose an online math activity below to practice math for 10-15 min. Lastly, you'll find science videos, articles, and/or lessons for them to explore each week. Jump in and have fun working with your teen through the different activities!

You can do as many activities or as little as you’d like. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our team in the FACE department: Alaina Wilcock - awilcock@graniteschools.org and Jodi Bingham - jklusty@graniteschools.org.

WHY SUMMER LEARNING?

Students Fall 2 Months Behind
During the Summer Months.

"Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer."

(White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004).

Summer Learning Gap Increase for Low Income Students.

"More than half of the achievement gap between lower - and higher -income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.

(Alexander et al, 2007).
