This course will look at ways of addressing behavior that aim to increase prosocial behaviors while acknowledging and affirming the diverse cultural background of our students. We will discuss the reasons for challenging behaviors, rethinking the control and power dynamics in the classroom, being proactive rather than reactive, and responding to the child rather than the behavior. You will leave this course with a variety of strategies to address both minor and chronic challenging behaviors and a plethora of resources on creating a classroom environment that is inviting, warm, and welcoming to all students.
In the first half of this PD, teachers will learn the basics around Trauma Theory: the ACE study, the impact of trauma on students, and student trauma manifestations. In the second half, teachers will learn about trauma-informed practices that fall into the four guiding principles of trauma-informed teaching: 1) build healthy teacher-student relationships, 2) create an emotionally safe classroom, 3) teach self-regulation, and 4) prioritize teacher trauma stewardship.
