My reasons for running for Cottonwood Freshman Class Officer is because I care about this school and the school spirit, I want to ensure everyone here has an amazing experience next year, I have the qualities that make a good leader and I want all students to feel welcome and included.
In office I hope to achieve one of the best years Cottonwood has seen. I want to introduce new ideas and activities that the school can use, I want everyone to be included and represented and I want this year to be a good time.
The qualifications I possess to be a Class Officer are empathy, leadership, confidence, responsibility and determination.
I plan to represent Cottonwood in a positive and innovative way by introducing new ideas, helping others and being kind to everyone.
Question #1: What are two initiatives you will work on as a Class Officer next year if you are elected?
Some initiatives I will work on as a Class Officer if I am elected are bringing school spirit to an all time high and making every student feel included. The school spirit Cottonwood has is already amazing, but sometimes little ideas can go a long way. Things like unique dress up days such as "No backpack day" where students are optionally challenged to bring a unique item to hold their school materials for the day and lunch activities such as trivia and basketball shootouts. Some ways I would make students feel included are ideas such as a suggestions box near the main office, where students can write down ideas they have to make the school a better place and class officers and staff can work together to try and implement this idea to make people feel more heard and make their high school experience better. Another way to make students feel more heard is voting on what dress up days for spirit week and football games should be. The amazing Stampede Officers would come up with a bunch of dress up day ideas and have other Cottonwood students vote on which ones they would want the most. The ideas with the most votes would be used.
Question #2: What does it mean to you to be a Colt?
To me, being a Colt means being a kind person, supporting others, having school spirit and believing that anything is possible.
Question #3: What is one way you would develop activities to make everyone at Cottonwood feel welcome and included?
Some ways I would make students feel welcome and seen is having them vote on what dress up days for spirit week and football games they want. Here's how it works. Our incredible Stampede Officers will come up with a list of dress up day ideas and they will give other Cottonwood students the opportunity to vote on which ones they would want to become real. The ideas with the most votes would be used in the next spirit week/football games.
Question #4: What advice do you have to stay motivated with attendance and academics throughout the year?
Some advice I have to keep people motivated throughout the year is to think about their future. Every second of schoolwork can lead to something incredible. If you have a goal then you have to put effort into it, and that effort starts in school.
Question #5: What are some qualities that make a great leader?
A good leader is responsible, determined, has a clear vision, confident, empathetic and can adapt to face any challenge they may come across.
Question #6: What is a leadership quality you have and how will it help you be a good Class Officer at Cottonwood?
A leadership quality I have that would help make me a good Class Officer at Cottonwood is my determination. I can complete almost any challenge I may face because I never give up on it. An example of this is Stop Motion. I do Stop Motion and it takes a lot of determination to start and finish. This helps me be more determined which is a very important quality for a good leader.
Question #7: What specific qualifications do you have for your intended position?
Some specific qualifications I have for Vice President are determination, empathy, helpfulness and confidence.
Task: Create a list of at least 4 Homecoming Homeroom activity ideas that you think students would enjoy and how you think those ideas will create a sense of belonging and unity in the school. Additionally, write two questions you could ask students to answer for the Humans of Cottonwood Instagram account.
Homeroom activity ideas:
Two truths and a lie: Everyone writes down two truths and one lie about themselves, then they go around and say the two truths and one lie. If nobody guesses your lie, you get a point, if you guess a lie of someone else, you get a point. The most points by the end gets a prize.
Add on to the drawing: On either a paper or whiteboard, a student draws a scribble on it. One by one, other students in the room take turns to add on to this scribble and make it into a full scene.
Debates: There is a pile of cards and someone draws a card. The card will have questions such as "Who would win in a fight, 100 humans or one gorilla. Everyone goes to either side of the room depending what their viewpoint is. The two teams get 5 minutes to debate the topic. After 5 minutes the class votes and whichever one has more votes wins.
Make a story: Start with a random person in the room and go in a circle. Each person can say one sentence maximum. The goal is to form a story with this added challenge.
