About Capstone

Granby Capstone Project

The Granby Capstone project measures how an individual student portrays the three pillars within the district mission.

The Granby Capstone is a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students at the completion of Grades 2, 5, 8 and 12. This project measures how an individual student effectively portrays the three pillars within our district mission statement demonstrating their ability to become powerful thinkers, effective collaborators and compassionate contributors in preparation for success in a dynamic, interdependent world.

Capstone projects encourage students to think critically, persevere, problem solve, and develop goal setting, research, written communication, media literacy, teamwork, and public speaking skills. Students select a topic, profession, or social problem that interests them, conducts research on the subject, creates a product demonstrating their learning, and delivers an oral presentation to peers, teachers, experts or community members.

Capstone in Second Grade

Our Second graders will be focusing their capstone projects on community helpers. Each student will independently research a community helper of their choosing and then write a nonfiction piece about them.

Each project begins with the inquiry process and asking questions. Some questions the students ask are:

  • What does my community helper do?

  • How can I become this community helper?

  • What gear and tools does my community helper use?

Once the research and writing process is complete students are broken up into collaborative groups. With their groups they will create a product they can use to present their information to an audience of their peers and parents. Their final product is then assessed using a district developed rubric.
