Representation matters. Whether it is a reflection of the diversity of lived experiences, or a window into another culture, reading literature about the struggles and joys of other people makes us more empathetic as a community.

We also benefit when we see ourselves and our families represented in literature--a validation of our culture, race, religion, sexual orientation, or body image. Often, books can be therapy; reading about mental health issues or personal struggles can help us process our own experiences or relate to others.
