Meet Mrs. Higgins

Many teachers will tell you that they always wanted to be a teacher. My story is a little different. Growing up, I didn't really enjoy school, and I certainly never considered being a teacher. I wanted to be all sorts of things, but a teacher never made the list! In college, I pursued quite a variety of fields of study, trying to find the right fit. I studied drama, radio/TV/film, criminal justice, environmental science, journalism, and psychology. All the while, my friends, family, and co-workers kept telling me I should be a teacher. I finally listened to them and enrolled in the teaching program at the University of North Texas. My first education class included working with groups of students in a fourth grade classroom, and I knew immediately that my family and friends had been right all along. I was meant to be a teacher! I graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1996, and began teaching in Carrollton-Farmer's Branch that same year. Twenty-six years later (with twenty-four of those years as a 4th or 5th grade teacher), I still believe that I was meant to be a teacher!

My husband and I were both born and raised in Conroe, Texas (although we didn't meet each other until after we had both moved away), and have been married for 28 years. After 6 years of teaching in Carrollton-Farmer's Branch, we moved to McKinney, where I took one year off from teaching after our first son was born and then taught for another 16 years. We have two adult sons, both of whom serve in the U.S. Air Force and attend college.

In the middle of the pandemic shutdown, my husband and I decided to move to Granbury. We had originally planned to move to Granbury in 2001, but our plans were put on hold after 9/11 and then forgotten about after we became parents. In the summer of 2020, we decided to revisit that plan, and we moved to Granbury just a few months later. We are so happy to be here, and I feel truly blessed that I have become a part of the Oak Woods family. This will be my third year at Oak Woods, and I look forward to many more wonderful years here!
