GRAFTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
GRAFTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
Dear Grafton families,
As we reach the end of another busy school year, I feel the familiar mix of trepidation and excitement that comes with good endings and fresh beginnings — and I know many of you feel this too. This time of year is precious: it gives us the chance to reflect on all we have achieved together and to look ahead with hope and purpose.
I am incredibly proud of what our pupils, staff and wider community have worked for this year. Our progress is clear and measurable — the results speak for themselves:
Phonics outcomes: 87% (higher than last year's 75%)
Reception Good Level of Development: 71% (an improvement on previous years)
Multiplication checks (NCTEM): 57%
KS2 Science: 89% (higher than last year)
KS2 Writing: 74% (higher than last year)
We have also invested in the school environment to make Grafton an even safer, more engaging place to learn: new fencing, improved playground equipment, and a brand-new library and meeting/intervention room have all been completed this year.
Our wider achievements have been recognised too. We are delighted to have gained or renewed the following awards:
TFL Gold Award
Gold Rights Respecting Award (renewed)
Healthy Schools Bronze Award
Gold School Sports Games Mark
None of this happens by accident. Thank you to our dedicated staff for their commitment to excellent teaching and caring for every pupil; to our governors for their strategic support; and to you — our parents and carers — for being partners in your children’s learning. Most of all, thank you to our pupils whose curiosity, kindness and determination bring our school values to life every day.
As we prepare for the autumn term, we will continue to focus on excellent teaching for every pupil, further embedding our REAL curriculum so that learning is relevant, engaging, aspirational and lifelong. For families of children moving to new classes or schools, we will ensure transitions are calm, clear and supportive.
Wishing all our families a restful and joyful summer. Stay safe, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in September refreshed and ready to grow.
With thanks and best wishes,
Junaida Bana
What a fantastic end to the school year we have had in Nursery!
We have continued learning our Phase 2 phonics using the Little Wandle programme. If you would like to continue supporting your child at home, there are lots of helpful resources on the Little Wandle Parent section of the website. Over the summer holidays, please continue practising phonics and name writing to help your child feel ready for Reception.
Our Teddy Bears' Picnic was a wonderful success! It was lovely to welcome so many parents and carers to join us. We enjoyed making sandwiches together, sharing our picnic and spending quality time playing with the children. Thank you to everyone who came along and made the afternoon so special.
We also had an exciting school trip to Jolly Jungle Soft Play. The children were fantastic as we walked to and from the venue, showing excellent listening and road safety skills. Everyone had an amazing time climbing, exploring and playing—I think the teachers enjoyed it just as much as the children!
We have also been busy practising for our Graduation Ceremony, and I can't wait to celebrate with all of our Nursery children and families on Thursday. I am incredibly proud of everything the children have achieved this year. It has been a privilege to watch them grow in confidence, independence and curiosity, and I wish them all the very best as they begin their exciting journey into Reception. Have a wonderful and well-deserved summer holiday!
Miss Cregan
We are incredibly proud of our Year 1 and Year 2 Rights Ambassadors, who have worked enthusiastically throughout the year to champion children's rights across our school.
Recently, our ambassadors played an important role in our Rights Respecting Schools Gold Reaccreditation. They met with the lead assessor and spoke confidently about what children's rights mean to them and how our school promotes the rights of every child. They were fantastic representatives of our school and demonstrated just how embedded our Rights Respecting ethos is in everyday school life.
The children have also enjoyed taking part in some exciting enrichment activities. To celebrate St. George's Day, they participated in fun cooking workshops where they decorated some delicious biscuits. It was a wonderful opportunity to work together, develop new skills and celebrate the occasion.
As part of their ambassador role, the children also planned and delivered an engaging assembly for Year 1 and Year 2 classes, sharing the importance of being a Rights Respecting School. They spoke with confidence and encouraged their peers to think about how we can all respect and uphold the rights of others every day.
A huge well done to all of our Rights Ambassadors for their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment. They continue to be excellent role models and ambassadors for our school, and we are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved.
The Year 3 and 4 Eco Schools Team has had a fantastic year making a positive difference both in school and in our local community. They helped keep Valence Park clean by taking part in a litter pick, collecting lots of rubbish and helping to care for our environment. The team proudly shared all of their achievements this year in a whole-school assembly and also presented their work to our school governors. They designed a welcoming new seating area for the library and created an inspiring Eco Code, which is now displayed around the school to encourage everyone to make environmentally friendly choices. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment to making our school a greener and more sustainable place!
We have come to the end of another fantastic year, during which we have watched our Year 6 children grow in confidence throughout their time at Grafton Primary School.
The children had an amazing time celebrating at Graftonbury, and there were certainly a few tears of pride and joy during their leavers' assembly. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved this year. They have also enjoyed signing one another's leavers' books and school shirts, creating special memories that they will treasure for years to come.
Thank you for your continued support throughout your child's time at Grafton Primary School. Your encouragement, kindness and partnership have played an important role in helping the children reach this important milestone.
Today, we say a fond farewell to our wonderful Year 6 children as they begin the next exciting chapter of their lives. Although they will be greatly missed, we know they are more than ready for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. We wish each and every one of them every success, happiness and confidence as they move on to secondary school and beyond.
Best wishes,
The Year 6 Team
The Nest is one of our inclusion classrooms where children spend part of their day receiving support with their academic learning, emotional regulation, speech and language and developing sensory experiences. It is a place where they can learn in small groups in a nurturing and conducive environment that aids and promotes access to learning. In the Nest this term we have been learning about Gardens and Minibeasts. The children have enjoyed reading different books each week and have been using Colourful Semantics to generate sentences about the books. In Maths, we have been practising our counting and number formation and also learnt about different patterns. Every day we have our Bucket sessions to develop our concentration and attention and the children have loved taking part in our daily sensory circuits in the hall. We have had weekly music lessons which the children have enthusiastically participated in using the instruments. The children really enjoy exploring the garden and enjoy outdoor play, including climbing, riding the bikes and playing with sensory resources.
Hello from your PTA!
As another fantastic school year comes to a close, we'd like to say a huge thank you to all our wonderful families, staff and volunteers for your continued support.
Summer Fayre Success!
A massive thank you to everyone who came along to our Summer Fayre. Thanks to your generosity and enthusiasm, we raised an incredible £2,378!
This amazing achievement wouldn't have been possible without our dedicated PTA team, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to organise such a successful event, and our fantastic school community who came together to make the day so special. The money raised will go towards providing much-needed new resources for our school playground, helping to create an even better outdoor space for all of our children to enjoy.
We're already excited about the new school year and would love to introduce even more fun ways for families to get involved!
We're thinking about activities such as:
Bake sales
Sponsored events
Family quiz nights
Community and family fun events
Have another great idea? We'd love to hear it!
We're always looking for new volunteers to help make our events happen.
The good news is:
You don't need to attend every meeting.
Even one hour of your time can make a real difference.
Some roles can be done from home, whenever it suits you.
No experience is needed—everyone is welcome!
There are lots of simple ways to support the PTA, including:
Donating raffle prizes.
Baking cakes or treats for events.
Helping with setting up or tidying away.
Sharing your skills, such as photography, graphic design, DIY or social media.
Asking your employer if they offer a matched fundraising scheme.
Every little bit of help, no matter how big or small, helps us create memorable experiences and opportunities for our children.
We'd love to hear your ideas or welcome you to our next PTA meeting. Whether you can spare an hour at an event or help behind the scenes, every contribution makes a real difference to our school community.
You can get in touch with us anytime at pta@graftonprimary.co.uk.
Thank you for your continued support—we can't wait to see what we can achieve together next year!
On Wednesday 1st July 2026, over 90 children from 3 Zephaniah Class, 5 Attenborough Class, and Year 6 were given the exciting opportunity to take part in a ballet engagement workshop in conjunction with the Royal Opera House. Inspired by the classic story Alice in Wonderland, the children participated in an engaging ballet and dance workshop led by professional artists.
Throughout the day, the children explored storytelling through movement, developing their creativity, confidence, and teamwork as they brought the magical world of Alice in Wonderland to life. They embraced every activity with enthusiasm and demonstrated excellent listening, focus, and imagination.
We were incredibly proud of all the children, who represented our school brilliantly. Their behaviour was outstanding, and they fully immersed themselves in the interactive workshops, showing great energy, respect, and willingness to try something new.
This was a truly memorable experience and a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to engage with world-class arts education. We are delighted that so many children were able to take part and create lasting memories through this fantastic day of dance and creativity. We look forward to seeing the final video version when it's available in Autumn 2026.
A massive thank you to all of the volunteers across the school who have helped us this year. We really appreciate all that you do to help children to access their learning, in reading, practical tasks and general classroom support. We couldn't do what we do without you. This year, Jenny completed a local authority reading training programme.
Our Reception children had a fantastic time at this year’s Sports Day, enjoying a morning filled with fun, laughter and teamwork. The children took part in a range of exciting activities, including running races, jumping challenges and the ever-popular cup of water relay. It was wonderful to see everyone encouraging their classmates, cheering on their team-mates and celebrating each other’s achievements. The smiles on their faces showed just how much they enjoyed the experience.
Our Key Stage 1 Sports Day was equally successful, with pupils demonstrating impressive determination, skill and enthusiasm throughout the event. From sprints and obstacle races to field events, every child gave their best effort and showcased their fantastic athletic ability. It was inspiring to see such excellent sportsmanship, resilience and teamwork, with pupils supporting one another and celebrating success together.
A huge thank you to all the staff, volunteers and families who helped make both Sports Days such memorable occasions. Most importantly, well done to all of our amazing children for taking part with such enthusiasm, positivity and pride. They should all be incredibly proud of themselves!
KS1 & KS2 SPORTS' DAY
On Tuesday 30th June 2026, Grafton Primary School proudly held its annual KS2 Sports Day, organised by Mr Stefan, providing an exciting and memorable day of sport, teamwork and celebration for all of our pupils.
Our Key Stage 2 Sports Day saw pupils from Years 3 to 6 head to Valence Park, where they had the fantastic opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in front of staff, family members and friends. The atmosphere throughout the day was full of excitement, encouragement and determination as children proudly represented their colour teams.
Pupils competed in a variety of fun and challenging events including the Sprint Race, Obstacle Course Race, Egg and Spoon Race, Bean Bag Race, Hockey Dribbling Race, Football Dribbling Race and the Bean Bag Throw Race. Every event allowed children to demonstrate different skills, from speed and agility to balance, coordination and teamwork.
It was wonderful to see every child giving their absolute best effort from start to finish. Whether competing for points or cheering from the sidelines, the children displayed outstanding sportsmanship, resilience, respect and encouragement towards one another. Their enthusiasm and determination made the day an incredible success, with countless smiles and memorable moments shared throughout the event.
On the 3rd of July, our Key Stage 1 Sports Day was held separately in the school playground and was organised by Mr Stefan and Mr Farquhar. The younger pupils enjoyed an equally exciting day filled with fun, laughter and plenty of energetic competition.
Children from KS1 competed in a range of age-appropriate events including the Sprint Race, Egg and Spoon Race, Hurdles Race and Hoop Race. The pupils showed fantastic enthusiasm, confidence and determination throughout every activity, proudly giving their very best whilst supporting and celebrating their classmates' achievements. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying their first experiences of Sports Day in such a positive and encouraging environment.
A huge thank you goes to all of the members of staff who helped make Sports Day such a fantastic success. Their support, organisation and encouragement ensured that every child had an enjoyable and memorable experience. We would also like to thank all of the parents, carers and family members who came along to Valence Park and the school to support the children. Your encouragement and enthusiasm helped create a wonderful atmosphere that the pupils will remember for years to come.
Last Friday, we held the Grafton Summer League Finale, bringing to a close what has been a fantastic competition throughout the summer term.
The Grafton Summer League has taken place every Friday lunchtime under my supervision and has been a hugely positive experience for everyone involved. It has been wonderful to see so many children taking part, developing their football skills, showing great teamwork and sportsmanship, and enjoying friendly competition. It has also been fantastic to see so many pupils coming along each week to support and cheer on their friends.
The finals saw the top four boys' teams from both the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 leagues compete in exciting semi-finals before battling it out in the finals. The standard of play, determination and respect shown by all the children made for a brilliant lunchtime event.
The Girls' Grafton Summer League Finale will take place next Thursday at lunchtime, following the same format, and we are looking forward to another exciting competition.
Overall, it has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. I captured some videos of today's matches and will be taking a photograph of the winning teams on Monday as they receive their certificates, which they can take home to celebrate their achievement.
We are delighted to be able to share this with you in the newsletter and celebrate all the fun, teamwork and sporting success our pupils have enjoyed during the Summer League.
Grafton Achievement Awards
On Wednesday, we were delighted to hold our Grafton Achievement Awards, celebrating the fantastic achievements of our children. It was wonderful to recognise those who received awards for achievement, progress, and living our school values.
Thank you to all the families and friends who attended to celebrate this special occasion. We are incredibly proud of every child for their hard work, determination, and positive attitudes. Congratulations to all of our award recipients!
To celebrate this year’s Refugee Week, our Reading Ambassadors visited the British Library to see the winning entries for the national No Place Like Home competition. Before the ceremony, they were able to see the winning art entries and read the heartwarming poems.
Back at Grafton, we received lots of impressive entries to our art and poetry competition. These will be on display in the school next year.
Summertime Reading
School is out, but reading doesn’t stop! Reading a good book offers a mental escape, gives children an enjoyable activity that sparks their imagination and provides a fulfilling shared experience with family. Research shows that regular reading over the summer helps to maintain the progress made during the school year. Children who do not read over the summer break can see a significant drop in their reading when they return in September.
