Ilene Elias, Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
taught students with hearing challenges and deafness for over 25 years.
bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Area focus - communication and interpreting.
certification from Cardinal Stritch University in elementary education and middle school English.
master's degree from UWM in the area of hearing loss and deafness and specific learning disabilities.
earning a doctorate in special education at Cardinal Stritch University - research interest the impact a trained teacher of the deaf provides within early intervention and how that affects reading skills when children enter elementary school.
free time - gardening, cooking, traveling, and reading. Also, spending time with her husband and visiting her children and grandchildren.
DHH Teacher role:
support for DHH students at all levels from early childhood through high school. Support may include academic, auditory comprehension, and self-advocacy. Each student's hearing needs are different and, in turn, their programs look different. Parents are an important part of each student's school success.

I serve as a language model for the student(s).
I provide a specific service, but I may assume other roles for the benefit of the student. I evaluate the situation and adapt accordingly.

I have been working exclusively with children for the past 15+ years in both clinical and educational settings. Launched Gateway Audiology LLC in 2019 to provide comprehensive audiology services to students in eight public school districts in the Greater Milwaukee area, as well as two private schools. In my free time, I love all things outdoors...hiking, biking, paddle boarding, golfing. I am also a musician, singing and playing piano. I also love to travel. I have been married for 27 years and have three fabulous children.
This year, Federal legislation was reintroduced that will strengthen the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to improve results for deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind children, including those with additional disabilities. Click on the picture to learn more.
