The first unit of work in the Personal Learning Plan is designed to explore the Future World of Work and allow you to build an understanding of how you will meet that Future. This begins with developing an understanding of the 7 SACE capabilities, an understanding of yourself - your skills, interests and dispositions - and developing a set of goals (long term & short term).
Questions you should be able to answer by the end of this Task 1:
What is the future of the World of Work and how can I navigate it?
What are the Capabilities and why should I care?
How do I utilise an understanding of self to develop goals?
How can thinking about the High Five Principles of Career Development help me navigate my future?
Students have commenced their Personal Learning Plan. As part of that they will be thinking of their life-long learning and career development, building skills and capacities to engage with their future.
The High Five Principles of Career Development (see figure) will guide the PLP.
Have a conversation between parent and student about the High Five Principles. Parents in conversation with students should try to develop some advice, or reassurance, for each of the principles. Students and parents will record the advice on the first blank table and can use the last two tables as examples of some advice, or reassurance they may like to provide to students.
The SACE capabilities comprise an integrated and interconnected set of knowledge, skills, and understandings that students develop and use in their learning through SACE subjects.
Students develop their ‘capabilities’ when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in changing circumstances, both in their learning at school, and their training and lives outside school.
The capability audits are a series of activities that will assist you to identify your strengths and limitations in each of the 7 SACE capabilities. Knowing yourself is a first step in developing a capacity to negotiate the future. You will need to complete each audit activity, and use this information to assist you in creating a goal to develop a capability of your choice. Ultimately, you will also use this information when thinking about possible career goals, and pathways in Task 2. There are no provided Literacy and Numeracy Audits as you can use the information you receive from your English and Maths subject teachers through your ongoing assessments and previous reports to assist you in deciding if you would like to make these areas a focus for any of your goals.
