In numerous developing countries, the increasing employment of women highlights the importance of understanding their daily travel habits. In Malaysia, where women constitute the majority of public transportation users, their needs are often overlooked in urban transit planning, discouraging their use of public transportation.
The relationship between sustainable urban development and public transportation is underscored by the gendered dimension of transit usage. Despite their significant presence, women face a lack of attention to their safety and comfort in urban transit systems.
Recognizing the distinct travel patterns of women, characterized by the 'Mobility of Care,' is crucial for understanding their daily mobility complexities, as these unpaid trips contribute to their transportation burden. 'Mobility of Care' represents a significant portion of daily mobility dedicated to accessing care tasks, predominantly undertaken by women.
Addressing this gender disparity in public transportation planning is essential for fostering inclusivity and equity, enhancing overall urban mobility, and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. This research proposal aims to design hideaway facilities and dedicated spaces for women within public transportation settings, enhancing the convenience and accommodation of women's daily commutes.
