This course aims at instilling the new urban planning students into the awareness of fundamental human-environment relationship, and the problem of our present-day built environment, in terms of urban livability and sustainability that lead to the basic appreciation of, and passion for, a good urban planning and design. The studio focuses on training students in excelling their various skills of perceiving and appraising the built environment and society that constantly shapes and uses it. Besides, this studio enhances students’ ability to communicate their opinions effectively and enables them to evaluate the built environment in visual (graphic such as freehand sketching and perspectives drawing) and verbal modes. In view of the importance of computer-aided design and digital media in the current planning practice, the studio also provides students with a basic training in AutoCAD and SketchUp.

PROJECT 1 : PUBLIC REALM QUALITY ASSESSMENT (20%)
Tan Hiok Nee Street is filled with colourful lanterns and calm atmosphere. The shophouses and cafe with green umbrellas create a pleasant view along the walkway. People can be seen walking and enjoy chatting by the roadsides cafe under the umbrella. The trees gives shade so people there dont get too hot. The weather is sunny and hot, yet it brings energy to people. Making it nice place to sit and relax.The areas feels so vibrant and welcoming for everyone.Â
The bright Marrybrown building has a bold color and brings a modern surrounding of heritage areas. Its become a popular photo spot and it attract people to visit there. It also filled with people and laughter in addition boost vibrant mood to the whole street. That makes visitor want to stay longer and capture memories with their familyÂ
There is two woman are walking together creating friendly and happy moments. The shophouses with signboard and colourful unique murals in the background. Cars and motorcycles pass by, their sounds blending with distant chatter and laughter. People there can smells of freshly brewed coffee from the nearby cafe which it give a scent that invite people to stop and explore. Place designated for staying and connecting with others, this place is great for human interactions and social skillsÂ
During the day, the shophouses are opened and this street comes alive with many people. The shop display lots of various things and indian traditional items. Some people stand infront of the shop buying the stuff. The shaded areas have provides awnings for pedestrians from the hot sun. People also can hear the Indian instrumental from the shop while passing by.Â
PROJECT 2 : HOUSING NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY ASSESSEMENT (25%)
The park thrives on weekend mornings, full of nearby families and residents utilizing the open field to fulfill diverse needs. From passive activities like family bonding picnics to active pursuits such as soccer and kite flying, the space offers a wide diversity of activities. With good weather and a cool breeze, the environment maximizes comfort, encouraging a full spectrum of engagementÂ
As the morning begins, the Emerald Lake park becomes a refreshing gathering spot for families and individuals. The wide green area in front of the lake offers shaded trees for people to sit, rest, and enjoy the view while feeding the fish. The sky is bright and open, making the entire atmosphere feel calm and inviting, creating the perfect place for staying and reconnect with natureÂ
The morning microclimate at Taman Pulai Utama provides a comfortable setting for outdoor public life. Cool air and early sunlight create favourable thermal conditions, while the mature tree canopy offers continuous shade and visual enclosure at a human scale. Teenagers moving along the paved path on scooters, contributing to a sociable and lively public-space character. As it is away from the noise of the main street, this place is distinctly sound and peaceful. Sounds from Tai Chi groups and rustling leaves, combined with the scent of fresh grass and clear sightlines across the park, enhance the sensory richness and restorative quality of the experience.Â
This vibrant morning scene reflects the qualities of an inviting and comfortable public space. Its design supports safety, easy access, and strong community interaction. People of all ages gather here, where children play badminton beneath shaded trees while energetic music from a nearby Zumba group enlivens the atmosphere. PROJECT 3 :Â
This historic alleyway is a well-known tourist attraction, famous for its iconic mural of a child riding a motorcycle that draws visitors from all over. As people explore the area, many are seen strolling along the narrow pathway, taking photos of the mural while others patiently wait for their turn. Several visitors carry umbrellas as they move through the space, adding to the lively scene. Under the scorching sun, the heat can feel intense, but a gentle breeze provides some comfort and relief. Despite the weather, the cheerful atmosphere and shared excitement among visitors create an enjoyable and memorable experience.
Chew Jetty is a well-known heritage site that offers a stunning sea view, featuring traditional blue boats and distant cruise ships that create a picturesque scene. Many tourists are attracted to this location and can be seen taking photos as keepsakes of their visit. However, the area is not very spacious and often feels crowded due to the large number of visitors. Under the vibrant blue sky, the bright sunshine brings a sweltering heat, which may cause some discomfort. In addition, visitors need to be cautious when walking on the old wooden planks, as certain parts are decaying and there are no safety railings along the edges.Â
Chowrasta Market is a popular local market that attracts both locals and tourists, especially in the morning. The area is bustling and noisy, with vendors selling fresh produce, dry goods, and a variety of beautiful souvenirs, creating a lively shopping environment. However, the market often feels cramped and congested due to the large crowds, causing visitors to feel hot and uncomfortable. In addition, visitors must prioritize their safety while navigating the streets, as motorcycles and cars frequently pass through the busy throng of shoppers.
Umbrella Alley is a unique and attractive walkway decorated with colorful umbrellas suspended overhead, creating a vibrant visual display while providing shade for visitors. This location has become a popular spot for families and friends, who are often seen taking photos and exploring the area together. The lively environment also encourages social interaction, as visitors naturally greet one another and engage in friendly conversations. The shaded setting offers comfort from the heat, allowing people to relax and fully enjoy the artistic scenery. Overall, the cheerful, community-driven atmosphere makes Umbrella Alley a place where visitors can truly enjoy themselves.Â
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
PROJECT 1
This is our studio's first drawing and it is my first time sketching. We learn a lot of techniques to sketch and it's really boost our motivation.
Our first site visit to JBCC , we went there by public transport. It was an experience for us when a car and a bus were involved in a small accident.Â

During the third watercolor workshop with our senior Lily, we learned more techniques to apply so that the results look better. It was very enjoyable
