Exploring Double Skin Façade (DSF) Approach for Daylight Harvesting
Classroom lighting is one of the most important areas need to address when developing education centre projects. This is hardly surprising if we take into account that classrooms are the heart of all activity in places of education. In architecture education, studio is the most important space where student develop their learning process such as drawing projection, exercises on grammar of design and visual composition. Besides, studio also a place for students sharing information, learning and interacts with their studio mates. Students will spend more time in the studio. Thus, light quality is vital for creating an inspiring studio space.Nevertheless, there are other areas such as communal areas, sports facilities and halls that also need to be suitably lit. Guaranteeing correct lighting is key to improving students’ academic performance. The aim is to design an architectural school with daylighting strategies that can be integrated into studio educational building designs, allowing the penetration of natural daylight while creating a comfortable studio environment. The objectives of the project is to identify the effective daylight harvesting strategies that provide optimum daylight to the space during daytime, to determine Double Skin Façade configuration mitigating direct solar radiation and glare, providing visual comfort as well as to design an architectural school with a design strategy of Double Skin Façade (DSF) integrated with greeneries, in order to achieve daylight harvesting and visual comfort toward studio occupants. By proposing a design strategy of Double Skin Façade (DSF) together with shading device and vertical plant helps in reducing glare and become a solar barrier during day time. Further, design strategy of Double Skin Façade (DSF) can be a solutions to achieve natural light availability, daylight harvesting, as well as view accessibility for an Architecture School.
