INFUSION BETWEEN HOUSING AND THIRD SPACE
The concept of "in-between spaces" refers to the semi-public and transitional areas within urban housing developments that facilitate social interaction and community building among residents. This study examines how the spatial configuration of these in-between spaces influences user interactions and contributes to the social fabric of urban housing environments. With urbanization accelerating globally, contemporary urban development often prioritizes high-density living, leading to increased reliance on shared spaces to foster a sense of community and enhance the quality of life. By examining case studies and polling inhabitants of various urban housing developments, this study examines the design, usability, and accessibility of a variety of in-between space, including courtyards, corridors, lobbies, and common gardens. On the other hand, this project will use conceptual design to investigate a new dwelling unit typology that includes shared frontage space, a back lane corridor, and an intermediate community area. The study demonstrates fundamental conceptual architectural ideas to be implemented in urban housing design that encourage community engagement and lessen the risk of social isolation that comes with living in a high-rise.
