Lubuk Tamu Community Gateway
Abandoned Marketplace: Weaving Kota Tinggi Cultural Fabric Through Adaptive Reuse
The design proposal reimagines the former Plaza Arisun, an abandoned marketplace that was once a vibrant community hub, into a resilient and sustainable gateway that reconnects the town with its cultural heritage. Strategically situated near the tun sri lanang bus and river terminals, this revitalized marketplace will serve as a central point for local activities and as a showcase for traditional johor crafts, textiles, and products, attracting both locals and visitors.
This proposal addresses post-flood recovery while promoting economic activity and cultural preservation. By celebrating Johor's rich heritage and integrating sustainable practices, the project aims to reinvigorate Kota Tinggi's identity, offering a model of adaptive reuse that fosters community pride, environmental resilience, and long-term socio-economic revitalization.
Incorporating adaptive reuse and circular economy principles, the proposal repurposes flood-affected building elements as construction materials, utilizing durable and recyclable components to ensure the structure's resilience against future environmental impacts while lowering maintenance costs. This approach minimizes waste and reduces embodied environmental impact.
