Restoring Greenery in the City
The Application of Green Roof in Urban Fitness Hub Malaysia
ABSTRACT
The urgency of global warming has lead to a global movement in focusing sustainability in urban development. Due to the increasing population and economic activities, the greeneris in urban context were rapidly decreased. (Siew, 2019) According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's statistics report 2010-2040 of Malaysian Projected Population, the country's population may rise from 28.6 million in 2010 to 41.5 million by 2040. Future energy use will increase with population growth, resulting in environmental disturbances. Urban heat island effect and flash floods have grown to be severe issues in cities over the years of urban growth. Kuala Lumpur become more urban and vehicular centric, emissions from vehicles, domestic pollution and loss of breathable green spaces have all accumulated and contributed to urban sickness. Rooftop greenery has become a popular solution to restore grenneries in the cities in many countries due to the limited spaces in cities. Green roof has many environmental benefits, such as mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce noise pollution and improve stormwater attenuation. Literature review has been conducted to study human thermal comfort, fitness type and the suitable plant species for green roofs in hot humid climate of Malaysia. The simulation is done by using software Design Builder to simulate the difference of temperature in the gym area space with and without the green roof, and with the different thickness of soil component in green roof. From the results, the space achieved better thermal performance with a green roof.
