Antiquary Incubator Centre
Spatial Sequencing Kaki Lima as Transitional Tool for formal informal spaces on Social Cohesion
"The project proposes an 'Antiquary Incubator' as a rejuvenation point in Johor Bahru's city centre, leveraging the cultural and economic significance of Pasar Karat. This incubator seeks to reactivate and nurture the local potential in antiquities, supporting micro-entrepreneurs. Central to this initiative is the role of kaki lima, which functions as a transitional tool, blurring the boundaries between formal and informal spaces. By adopting the permeable and connective nature of kaki lima, the project fosters social cohesion, encouraging organic interactions. This approach not only revitalizes heritage sites but also strengthens the local economy and mitigates social fragmentation caused by brain drain, ultimately preserving Johor Bahru’s unique identity.

The spatiality of the kaki lima transcends transitional spaces, blurring the boundaries between formal and informal both vertically and horizontally,
acting as an adaptive connector and a permeable axis."
The Antiquary Incubator Centre is centred around Pasar Karat JB’s antique dealing programs, which play a significant role in the site’s socio-cultural fabric and should be preserved in Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Jalan Trus at the JB City Nodus. Pasar Karat’s identity originated at Jalan Trus, specifically along the five-footway, as stated by Tuan Haji Abdul Aziz bin Ithnin, Pengarah Khidmat Pengurusan MBJB. He noted that the initial idea for Pasar Karat emerged there before it was relocated to its current site at Jalan Segget. Notably, the kaki lima serves as a transitional space where passersby pause to admire the antiquities displayed along the walkway.
