Attempts will be made wherever possible to keep to the following ratio of adults to children, using as a guide the ratios required in regulations governing day-care for under 8’s:
0 - 2 years - 1:3
2 - 3 years - 1:4
4 - 8 years - 1:6
9 - 12 years - 1:8
13 - 18 years - 1:10
At least 2 adults (with valid DBS checks) should be present, even with smaller groups.
If young people are helping to supervise younger children, only people aged 18 or over should be included as adults when calculating adult to child ratios.
Where possible the gender of the adults should reflect that of the group: i.e. at least one man if boys are present and one woman if girls are present.
A Register of children / young people attending each church-run group or activity must be kept, including a register of leaders present, using the ChurchSuite Check-In.
During toddler group sessions run by the Church, parents or carers are entirely responsible at all times for the children in their care. Any concerns about children attending these groups should be referred to the Safeguarding Coordinator.
Children and young people who have a disability can be at greater risk of abuse. They will often require more help with personal care. Some children may have limited understanding and behave in a non-age-appropriate way. It is good practice to speak with the parents/carers of children/young people with special needs and find out from them how best to assist the child or young person.
These guidelines apply to the transportation of children, young people and adults at risk on behalf of GCB as part of an official church activity, and particulalry if it involves an employee of GCB.
They do not apply to private arrangements, for example, transport arrangements made between parents and friends.
GCB requires that:
Parental consent is obtained for all journeys.
At least two adults should be present in a vehicle when transporting children as part of a church role.
All children and young people should be returned to an agreed drop off point (ensure parents / carers know time and place).
At collection or drop off points, children should never be left on their own; make sure they are collected by an appropriate adult (ensure that parents tell you in advance who will be picking up their children if they aren’t doing so themselves).
All drivers must:
Hold a valid DBS certificate
Hold a valid full Driving Licence - be aged 21 or over, and have held a valid full driving licence for at least 2 years.
Ensure that they have valid and adequate insurance cover and that the vehicle being used is road worthy with a valid MOT.
Ensure children and young people are adequately supervised on the journey and take the necessary safety precautions including ensuring that everyone is wearing a seat belt.
