The Mansion's Claim to Fame
The Villa Diodati Mansion is famously known for Lord Byron renting and staying in the mansion. During his stay, Percy and Mary Shelley, Claire Clairmont, and John Polidori competed in their famous scary story contest. It was here that the ideas were born for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and John Polidori’s The Vampyre.
What to do when you get here
Now is the time to relish in the richness that the mansion has to offer with fully furnished rooms for you to lounge about. If you have hit a roadblock in your creative writing, you may be inspired with a spark of a dream, just as Mary Shelley. If weather permits, and we hope for better weather than the time of the famous scary story contest, you can tour around the mansion and go into town to some of our highly recommended spots. Feel free to explore and relax! If you find any need not met, let the staff know and we would love to help you in any way to make your stay more comfortable.

Reviews of Villa Diodati Mansion
Mary Shelley- The weather was cruel and unrestrained during my stay. I was held indoors to be left to my own devices of entertainment. I craved and anticipated when I would be free to roam outdoors. I was in awe of the beauty and intensity of the structure.
Claire Clairmont- I observed the intensity of the mansion as striking, it was attractive and alluring. I had anticipated spending my time with my new suitor, Lord Byron, however, my mood was defiled by the company he gave. I was treated poorly by him and I am afraid it spoiled my trip. I would return, if not in the company of Lord Byron.
Percy Shelley- Upon walking up to the grandeur of the mansion, I found it disheartening and to darken my mind as I saw I would never be of its stature. The time spent there was surpassing my expectations and I ache to return if not for my financial strains.

Thank you for entrusting us to take you on a grand European Tour. Our company thanks you for your business and trust. The escorted tour you have chosen is roughly based on the beginnings of Mary Shelley’s life, the esteemed author of the famous novel Frankenstein. This is a tour in which we will take you through London where Mary Shelley was born and died. As you drive and head to new locations you will be given in-depth explanations of Mary Shelley’s life and what led her to writing Frankenstein, so make sure you are paying attention!
Here is a rough schedule of the tour you will be adventuring on soon!
We start our journey at 9am with a guided tour by a true Somers Town, London native. Your guide will show you the locations of Mary Shelley’s homes in London, the one standing strong, and unfortunately her father's home that has sadly been built over. Your guide will show you the talk of the town in the 1790’s-1850’s in which Mary Shelley was alive. They will also show you what teenagers today like to do as you pass through the hot dining areas of town and the best hangouts.
At 10:30 am, your tour will make a big stop at the British Library Treasures Gallery- London. Here you will learn about many of the famous British authors, including Mary Shelley. They even have some original manuscripts!
Your tour group will stop at 11:50 am to let you choose where you want to eat! Be adventurous and try something new! The tour guide will go with the group majority to eat, so if you saw something you thought was interesting to try, speak up!
Your group will then head to the “Theatre Royal Drury Lane”, built in 1812 to catch a live performance at 1pm.
Following the show, your group will make a trip to the St Pancras Old Church to view Mary Shelley’s mother's grave. This is where Percy and Mary had many of their meetings and is said to have been where Mary learned to trace her letters over her mother's name.
At trip's end, you'll receive your own copy of each edition of Frankenstein for your reading pleasure. Ask your tour guide any questions and then make it back to your hotel safely, before dark.
