Sight Words

There are a total of 60 sight words (linked below) that students will need to know by the end of the school year. They will be assessed quarterly on the words that are sent home on a ring. All 60 sight words will have been sent home by the beginning of 3rd quarter. During the 4th quarter there will not be any new sight words being introduced. During the last quarter, kindergarten teachers will be reviewing all 60 sight words with students.

These are words that are commonly found in text and must be recognized by sight and not by sounding them out. Being able to recognize these words fluently (within 3 seconds) will greatly help your child in reading. Please practice frequently with your child.

Below are a few ways you can practice with your child at home:

• Write the words on index cards and attach them to the refrigerator or bedroom door. Each time your child opens the door they can say the word(s) as a password.

• Jump, hop or clap out the letters of the sight words (t-h-e “the”).

• Play hide-and-seek, memory or go-fish with sight word cards.

• Make a path along the floor and have your child walk the path to read and spell each word.

• Allow your child to help you type the words on a word document on the computer.

• Write the words on sticky notes and stick them around the house.

• Build sight words with play-doh, shaving cream, kinetic sand and more!
