Technology has provided us with many benefits. For some, it is a way to seek connection to our families and peers. For others, it has become an outlet for self-expression. But technology has also brought challenges for our school community, as well as districts across the nation and around the world. The use of phones has impaired our ability to provide a positive, inclusive and safe environment for all students where learning, focus, safety, community and belonging are prioritized. The presence of personal devices such as cell phones, earbuds, and smartwatches has undermined the culture of our school and the core values we strive to uphold.
While we recognize that technology plays an important and necessary part of our lives, we also know that time away from phones and social media is essential to healthy growth and emotional maturity. With this in mind, we have moved to a bell-to-bell phone-free policy for students. This means that phones must be turned off or silenced and stored away for the entire school day, along with earbuds and smartwatches. We know that this transition will pose some challenges and cause some discomfort at first, but we hope that it will quickly become a positive experience that benefits students both emotionally and academically.
Certainly, many of you will have questions or concerns, which we hope this website will answer. However, you may also email phonefree@gpsd.us with any questions not addressed herein. We look forward to continuing to work together to create the healthy academic and social environment our students deserve.
A Yondr pouch is issued to each student. Phones, earbuds, and smartwatches will be manually locked in the pouch upon entering the school building. They will be unlocked at dismissal using magnetic technology.
If the pouch is lost or deliberately damaged, a fee of $40 will be charged to the student for a replacement pouch.
