In the seas of New Zealand where the breeze is cool,
A very unique penguin walks, with its eyes like a golden stool.
Along the rocks where the waves crash and roar,
The Yellow-eyed penguin nests near the shore.
With black feathers as beautiful as midnights viel,
It glides through the ocean like a ship set sail.
Like children alone, their hearts full of fear
In a clump of feathers, they huddle near.
Where the Yellow-eyed penguin calls home,
Is the exact same place where red cod roam.
The way the penguin likes to eat squid and opal fish,
It would make you think, why not on a dish?
Grown adults stand at two feet tall like a teddy,
It would make you ponder, is it grown already?
Plagued by many predators such as dogs, cats and seals,
Predators would call them a bunch of quick meals.
Weighing the same amount as a bowling ball,
For any human it would feel as if it were a floating monkeys claw.
Living to be about the age of twenty three,
They have the same longevity as Bruce Lee.
Only about six thousand to seven thousand individuals left,
Thinking about them going extinct could make you depressed.
Hatchlings vulnerable to diseases such as bacterial infection and blood parasites,
Wouldn’t it be nice to take them to paradise.
Lush green and beautiful coastal forest, cleared and burnt down,
Leaving the area sad and brown, and the penguins with a frown.
The yellow-eyed penguin the most charming species in the world,
Needs to be kept safe and preserved.
