Hello! I am Mrs. Harris, the School Counselor at Williamson Elementary! I am a proud product of GPISD! I received my bachelor's degree in psychology from Prairie View A&M University and my master's in Counseling and Development from Lamar University.

This will be my 2nd year at Williamson Elementary and my 12th year in education. Before becoming a school counselor, I served as an Interventionist, Special Education Case Manager, and Teacher.

I believe every child can learn and succeed – they might need help to remove barriers and bring out their best selves. It is a great privilege to serve students in that way and be a part of a team that educates children holistically.

Parent Referral

Helping children with emotional regulation requires a combination of modeling, teaching, and supporting their development of self-awareness and coping skills. Parents can assist their children with emotional regulation in several ways, including Conscious Discipline and breathing techniques.

Model Emotional Regulation

• Children learn emotional regulation by watching their parents.

• Stay calm during stressful moments to demonstrate self-control.

Build Connection & Safety

• Ensure children feel safe and connected, as emotional regulation is difficult without a secure relationship.

Teach and Practice Breathing Techniques

• S.T.A.R. (Smile, Take a deep breath, And Relax) – Helps parents and children calm down.

• Balloon Breathing – Inhale deeply while raising your arms like inflating a balloon, then exhale while lowering your arms.

• Drain Breathing – Tighten hands like squeezing water from a sponge, then release while exhaling.

• Pretzel Breathing – Cross arms, fold hands and breathe deeply to encourage focus and calmness.

Validate Feelings & Teach Emotional Awareness

• Label emotions: “I see that you are feeling angry. It’s okay to feel that way.”.

• Avoid dismissing feelings—acknowledge their experiences as real and important.

Provide Co-Regulation Before Expecting Self-Regulation

• Young children need co-regulation—guidance and support in calming down before they can do it independently.

• Use a calm, soothing presence to help children regulate emotions.

• Offer physical comfort (hugs, gentle touch) if the child is open to it.
