About Ms. Barrera
Hello, my name is Alexia I. Barrera, and I'm an elementary music specialist at Cimarron Elementary Fine Arts Academy (#TheBESTSchoolInTheWorld), one of Galena Park ISD's two esteemed fine arts academies.
With 7 years of experience in education, I'm passionate about providing a holistic learning experience that nurtures the whole child. My teaching philosophy is rooted in healing-centered and trauma-informed approaches as well as leading with kindness. I truly believe these are essential in creating a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to truly thrive and excel. I also proudly hold two levels of Kodaly certification, which has deepened my understanding of music education and its impact on these brilliant young minds I serve. I've also had the privilege of helping shape the district's fine arts vision through my participation in the GPISD Fine Arts Visioning Summit in 2025.
As a musician, I've been fortunate enough to continue pursuing my own passion for singing with the Lake Houston Chamber Singers and through our amazing collaborative partnership with Disney's Musicals in Schools and Houston's own Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS). This partnership will launch our campus’ musical theatre program, guaranteeing three productions over three years and giving students a dynamic, creative outlet for generations to come.
My own musical journey began as a toddler singing for my family, and it blossomed further when I joined choir at Roma Middle School and continued as well as being part of the Mighty Gladiator Choir in Roma High School (in charming Roma, TX, a border city located in the Rio Grande Valley - puro 956!). I earned my Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a focus on voice and choral studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where I graduated with honors and with International Distinction from UTSA's Honors College in December 2018. I’ve since had the joy of teaching students ranging from age 3 to over 50, and I’m eager to continue guiding our talented students in here Colt Country. When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me exploring Downtown Houston, lifting weights at the gym, belting out tunes at karaoke, or savoring the city’s incredible food scene!
