Dr. Sexton's Classes

Medical Microbiology

Academic Decathlon

 Class Overviews

Medical Microbiology

Medical Microbiology is a class in which we will study the microbes that affect people.  These are microbes that one is likely to find in human illnesses and will come into contact with during a medical career.  This course is a Career and Technical Education course and is taught at a regular level for high school, but will be advanced compared to other science courses due to the nature of the material.  Medical careers require intense study, hard work and a dedication to helping mankind.

Microbiology is an integral part of many different scientific studies, such as immunology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, medicine, agriculture, ecology, industrial processes and many more. People working in these fields use microbiology in their daily procedures, although they aren't microbiologists. Because of the wide range of its applications, understanding the basics of microbiology is in many ways essential to our completeness as biologists, no matter what field we may pursue.

Learning activities will include, but are not be limited to, scientific reading and writing, oral recitation, lectures, guest speakers, virtual learning, research, and laboratory experiments.

Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon is a national academic competition.  North Shore Senior High School is a part of Region V of the Texas Academic Decathlon.  Teams consist of nine members, of whom 3 each have GPAs (calculated on core course grades) of A, B and C.  Each year a specific topic of study is chosen and teams are tested on their knowledge of this subject in 10 areas.  These areas are math, music, art, economics, speech, interview, essay, language/literature, science and social sciences.  Art, math, music, economics, language/literature and science tests are multiple choice.  The culmination of the competition is the Super Quiz relay. The Super Quiz relay includes questions (in multiple-choice format) from the following six subject areas: art, economics, literature, music, science, and social science.  Speech and Interview are performed in front of 3 judges; essays are graded by 2 or 3 graders.

About me

I am, Dr. Alice May-Sexton, D.C.  I completed my undergraduate degrees at The University of Texas at Austin in the spring of 2000.  My Doctor of Chiropractic Degree was received in December of 2006.

My husband and I have been married since 2005.  We have and have a daughter, Kailey, and a dog named Truman.  Kailey is a student at Deer Park High School who plays 2 Varsity sports.

I am an avid runner, competing in races ranging in distance from 5K to the full marathon.  Additionally, my husband are avid weight lifters and enjoy pushing each other to achieve new goals.

Education has always played an important role in my life, so after leaving a successful sports injury practice I began teaching at NSSH in order to give back to the community.

I am very excited to meet all of you and look forward to a great year!
