The Purpose of Chapel

The Governor’s Academy community gathers in the Mosely Chapel every Wednesday morning for a period of quiet reflection and contemplation. Students, faculty, and staff enter the chapel in silence to the sounds of live music selected to set the tone for the gathering. Chapel talks cover a wide range of subjects and genres. They can move the audience to tears, provoke uproarious laughter, or inspire others to examine their own lives in new ways. Whatever the form, chapel talks all share one thing in common—they represent one community member’s effort to share something that is meaningful to them with the entire school community. In that sense there is a seriousness of purpose that grounds all chapel talks, even when the message is delivered in a light-hearted way.

When considering giving a chapel talk, members of the community should consider what message they would like to share that will be worthy of the attention of the entire school community. Chapel talks should be inclusive and accessible to all members of the community, avoiding references to inside jokes. They should also be respectful to all members of the community and the values of the Academy. References that glorify violations of community standards or that seek a laugh at the expense of others are not appropriate for chapel.

Speaking in chapel is a privilege, and those who seek this privilege have a responsibility to themselves and to the larger community to use their opportunity wisely and responsibly. When students are granted the opportunity to speak in chapel, they are also required to meet with Mr. Wann in advance to rehearse their presentations and receive feedback on content, composition, and delivery.
