Collecting Data
There are two ways to collect data for research:
Primary Data: Information collected directly
Secondary Data: Information that is collected by someone else
Survey Sequence:
1. Brainstorm a topic
2. What do we want to find out?
3. Create 4-10 questions
4. Type or hand write the survey
5. Create a tally/frequency chart to record your data
6. Collect the data. Remember not to be biased
7. Analyze the data
Mean - the sum of a set of numbers divided by the number
of numbers in the set(average).
Example: 15 + 7 + 8 + 10 = 40 / 4 = 10
Median - the middle value in a set of ordered data.
If there are 2 numbers in middle, the median is the mean(average) of the 2 numbers.
To Solve: put the numbers in order from smallest to largest.
Find the middle number.
Example: 4, 6, 9, 8, 7, 9, 10, 9, 7, 6, 9, 9, 4 = 8
or 4, 4, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 10
Mode - the number that occurs most often in a set of data.
Example: 4, 6, 9, 8, 7, 9, 10, 9, 7, 6, 9, 9, 4 = 9
