W.C.I. PHYS. ED. AREAS
Change Rooms / Valuables –
The boys and girls change rooms are both located outside the doors to the main gym. Valuables are not to be left in the change rooms but rather in your lockers!! If you forget to leave something valuable (money, phone, jewelry, etc.) in your locker, bring it to your teacher and a solution will be made for that day. Do not touch anyone else’s property in the change room.
THE H.P.E. DEPARTMENT WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS!!!
Main Gym –
This gym has an excellent hardwood floor and is equipped for our various activities. You must wear running shoes with non-marking soles while participating in any gym activity. No one is allowed to use the gym at any time unless a teacher is present. Equipment is to be properly stored while not in use. Putting equipment away is part of your gym mark.
Electronics –
Electronic devices (including phones) are not allowed in gym class. Your device will be confiscated on first offence and returned after class. Upon second offence you will have to retrieve it from the office.
Small Gym/Fitness Room -
Located by the music room. Never enter this area without supervision from a teacher. Safety is of the utmost importance to us, so you must be trained before you can work-out in this area. Phys. Ed. classes and sports teams use this facility to work-out and train. Fitness Club runs at every lunch during Mondays - Thursdays.
Equipment Rooms -
There are two equipment rooms in the main gym. Students may not enter without permission from the teacher. Equipment may only be used with supervision.
Phys. Ed. Office –
Located outside the gym, between the change rooms. Your Phys. Ed. teacher can often be found in the office before class or throughout the day. Please knock before entering. First aid materials are also kept in the office and can be obtained by asking your Phys. Ed. teacher.
Gym Balcony -
Located around the top of the main gym. It is mostly used by spectators for sporting events. Do not go on the balcony without permission from your teacher during class. Chairs are not allowed on the balcony. If a ball or birdie goes up there please let your teacher know and retrieve it with their permission.
INJURIES
If you suffer any injury during class, notify the teacher right away so that proper treatment can be given. If you suspect an injury but are not sure, please ask the Phys. Ed. Teacher to take a look at it. Also, if you witness a classmate get injured and they are unable to inform your teacher, please do so immediately.
NOTEBOOK
Each student will be required to maintain a Physical and Health Education notebook in the form of a binder. Your notebook should contain: health notes, health tests, Phys. Ed. written tests, any rule sheets, etc.
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance and participation is essential to achieve your Phys. Ed. credit. Missing classes for any reason can negatively affect your mark.
If you are injured and cannot participate in P.E. classes for an extended period of time (more than 2 days) a doctors’ note is needed and an alternative program will be set up. If the injury could cause you to miss significant class time then consultation with your teacher will determine if and how you can get your credit.
If you are ill and miss one or two periods then a note from home must be brought, if it is not called into the main office, excusing you from class with the appropriate dates. You may be given a restricted activity (at the teacher’s discretion) or sent to do health work for the period in a supervised area. If you do not have a note you will be expected to participate.
If you forget to bring gym clothes to class, a loss of marks will result. Try to borrow clothes from a friend or see if anyone in the class has extra so this does not happen to you. You may be asked to wear some clothes provided to you by your teacher.
You must report to class each day regardless of your injury if you are at school. “Skipping” a class will result in a loss of marks and other disciplinary measures. These could include sitting out activities to do written work for a few periods (at the discretion of your teacher) as well as notifying the office and your home.
PUNCTUALITY
Period 1 gym students are to be changed and in the gym (not in the change room) when the national anthem/morning announcements begin. Students should make their way to the change rooms from all other periods quickly. All students should be changed and in the gym area when the class bell sounds. Attendance is taken at this time. Being marked late for class even occasionally will lower your grade and may lead to a phone call home or a meeting with the Vice Principal.
GYM CLOTHES
Proper activity clothing is important to ensure safety, cleanliness, comfort and a sense of belonging in the gym and outdoors. No one is allowed to participate in street clothes or in improper gym shoes.
Proper gym clothes include:
1. Appropriate non-marking running shoes (a cross trainer is recommended)
2. Athletic shorts or athletic pants
3. T-shirt
4. Proper athletic support undergarments
5. A bag of some sort to carry your clothes and shoes (Gym bag is recommended)
** These items should be clean and not worn to school for the rest of the day.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Fire Alarm Procedure:
When the fire alarm sounds gym students are to leave the gym/change room area and proceed up the South stairs and out of the school, crossing the street and congregating on the other side.
In the fitness room, students will exit the West doors to the municipal parking lot. While outside, students should stay together for attendance purposes.
Tornado Drill Procedure:
Students should go into the hallway outside the main gym where they will sit shoulder-to-shoulder facing the wall with their head between their knees. In the fitness room, the students will proceed to the first floor hallway.
Lockdown (Code Red):
Phys Ed. Students should swiftly move to the East gym wall under the overhang and sit shoulder-to-shoulder quietly. In the fitness room, we will enter the equipment room. All doors in the gym/fitness room should be locked and lights turned off with the windows covered.
During health, we will follow the posted procedures for each individual room.
