The 2020 Global Read Aloud (GRA) selections include two books with a focus on Indigenous content and one that has Indigenous content presented from a settler perspective. All three selections are stories that are from what is today the United States of America, and also connect to the challenging topics of colonization and assimilation. TVDSB First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Education encourages staff to provide learning about local Indigenous Nations prior to teaching about Nations further from your school community and to build a culturally safe environment before sharing the impacts of colonization and assimilation on Indigenous Peoples. The TVDSB Literacy Learning Coordinators have teamed up with the TVDSB FNMI Education staff to create resources that will help with these approaches by providing learning strategies and important information on terminology, Indigenous views, cultural safety, and the impacts of assimilation.
