Students will be using our classroom website this year and the GoogleEducation Apps! They will have personal portfolios of their learning that allows myself and themselves to document their learning. As per new TVDSB policy, platforms such as FreshGrade, are no longer permitted to be used. It is important to review your child's portfolio once they are sent home and to discuss with your child what they are learning. From time to time, there will also be parent/child reflection questions as homework. Feel free to always sign in with your child into our Google Classroom.
*Additionally, I will be sending weekly updates posted on the website and a reminder will be sent to your emails weekly (on Sundays before the next week).
In preparing students to become 21st century learners, technology will play a large role in our classroom. Students will be active rather than passive consumers and producers of technology in grade 5/6. Students will use all of the technology available to us throughout the year to expand their knowledge of technology and how it can be used constructively in our daily lives. Students will use googledrive, google classroom, learn basic coding skills, complete online research, and MUCH MORE throughout this year!
Our classroom will have a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or PED (Personal Electronic Device) policy meaning that students can bring in their personal electronic devices to aid in projects and research in the class. Devices will NOT be used during breaks and solely for educational purposes, otherwise privileges will be taken away. Students who partake in BYOD MUST have the parent permission form signed and completed.
Homework will be used as a time for students to finish incomplete work from class, prepare for upcoming classroom learning, complete interactive activities with family members, play games, review concepts, and read. If your child is spending more than 20 minutes on a task a night, please let me know and we will figure out why it is taking so long to complete.
Your homework: Read, Read, Read!
Research has shown independent reading to be one of the most important indicators of success. I strongly believe in encouraging students to read a variety of texts (books, articles, magazines, comics) in both French and English. This reading should be done for pleasure on genres/topics of interest.
It is expected that students read nightly for 20 minutes with at least three days a week in French. Students will have projects throughout the year to work on at home that focuses on reading including book talks (Eng. & Fr.) and article talks. Students will also be sharing their reading in class and during guided reading groups!
It is important to get quality books at your child’s reading level. We will be discussing how to choose a book that’s “just right”. We have a wonderful classroom and school library and Scholastic book orders in French and English will be coming home monthly. CHECK THE LANGUAGE Page for recommendations and tools!
*Due to updated Health and Safety Protocols to maintain social distancing, we will be unable to do flexible seating starting in September. Students will be assigned a desk spaced apart from peers and any materials will NOT be shared. We will try to integrate some flexible seating options as permitted. However, students will be asked to remain in their seat as much as possible to limit movement. Don't worry we will try to move as much as possible and will go outside for learning as well!
Students will not be allowed (at this time) to share any supplies to limit touched surfaces between students. Students will be responsible for organizing and storing classroom materials such as duotangs, cahiers, etc. Students will be provided with all the supplies that they need. However, they should have:
-2-3 masks (and a small bag to keep dirty ones)
-a pencil case (pencils + sharpener, markers, highlighters etc.) Writing tools will be provided for each student to keep at their desk, but students are welcomed to bring their own!
-clean shoes: 1 pair of indoor and 1 pair of outdoor shoes
-a refillable water bottle: please ensure to send your child with healthy snacks/lunches to fuel their learning. Water fountains will be closed, so students will be required to fill up their water bottles.
-headphones: small headphones to place in their desk
**Please leave all other materials/toys/games at home as it can be a distraction for your child's learning.
As we are learning to become organized and independent learners in a 21st century world, students are asked to actively use their personal googlecalendar (technology permitting) and task manager to write assignments, tests, reminders. This will be a part of our classroom routines. These will be able to be shared with myself, and with you as well. Agenda information will also be input into our class googlecalendar on this website & on their googlesites.
Our class will NOT be using paper agendas this year. If you have questions regarding this, please contact me and I would be happy to help!
