Unit 1
REFLECTION
Supporting Pieces of Evidence
White Teacher Discussion
31:30-34:45 and 39:02-40:25
Expectations Met:
Reading and Lit Studies
Reading For Meaning: Final Reflection
This piece shows how through reading the novel Stamped and the 'rap' activity pieces of my peers I was able to connect real world encounters and experiences to show my understanding of the content
Understanding Form and Style: Zeitgeist Activity
being able to analyze the lyrics of Dynasties and Dystopia and convey the greater meaning extracted from the lyrics allowed me to meet this expectation since I was able to recognize a variety of features and elements that helped communicate the meaning of the lyrics.
Reading with Fluency: Final Reflection
In order to review and edit my piece I needed to use my knowledge of words and ability to cue systems to read fluently. I also needed the ability to read fluently to read Stamped and other literary text to write a reflection on them.
Reflecting Skills and Strategies: Final Reflection
I was able to address some issues I had previously regarding having a not so good understanding of racism and how to differentiate it from other forms of human nascence which throughout the reading of the novel changed as I started to understand the text and the unit better to a point where I became a stronger reader by expanding my knowledge and understanding on racism.
Writing
Developing and Organizing Content: Final Reflection
By picking key moments throughout this unit that impacted me and further developing how and why those moments impacted me in order to produce a reflection on our first unit I was able to meet the expectation of developing and organizing content.
Using Knowledge of Form and Style: Final Reflection
By using MLA formatting and previous knowledge of paragraph structuring throughout the piece I was able to demonstrate the expectation of understanding form and style.
Applying Knowledge of Conventions: Final Reflection + Rap Activity
By looking at the version history of the linked document for the final reflection and the rap activity I demonstrate this expectation through editing my word choices, sentence structures and spelling in order to refine my final piece.
Reflecting on Skills and Strategies: Final Reflection + Day One
I described my lack of depth on my thoughts and writing from my first reflection and how it has changed over the course of the unit. Using the day one reflection I show that lack of further development in concepts or ideas and how not only perspective has changed with the final reflection but also interest in the topic of racism.
Oral Communication
Listening to Understand: White Teacher Discussion
Through out this unit there has been many opportunities for discussion. Specifically during the white teacher discussion I had taken the time to listen to all the points of my peers and their perspectives in order to add to the discussion appropriately.
Speaking to Communicate: White Teacher Discussion
This discussion demonstrated my ability to appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes since I used speaking skills and strategies to explain my views on the importance of being taught about racism and its importance regardless of the race of the person teaching it to my peers and teacher.
Reflecting on Skills and Strategies: Final Reflection + WT Discussion
In my reflection I talked about how the desire to listen to my peers in discussions of racism has grown as I have began to explore my part as a speaker in certain settings of discussion such as race and experience of racism.
In my part of discussion in WT after my first portion I realized that I was not speaking to the point and had some empty words or repeating words that did not help communicate my views to the class effectively, in turn in my second portion I made sure to slow down and be more clear with my words and my choice of words with my intention in mind. This allowed me to meet this expectation by identifying my strengths and weaknesses and using them to create a new strategy for improvement.
