Students may only take 1 Healthy Active Living course from the PPL 3O category
This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills and will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety. Examples of the recreational activities are golf, tennis, racquetball, horseback riding, ice activities and cross country skiing and several field trips, such as Circle R Ranch, Strathroy Arena, Fitness Clubs. An activity fee may be required.
SHA is open to students of all levels of ability. Students will spend approximately 45 hours on the ice at the Gemini Arena where the primary aim is to develop individual hockey skills and tactics and apply them in a team setting. Students will also be involved in a variety of other activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. These include fitness and weight training, other sports and recreational games, nutritional planning, decision making and goal setting. There may be an activity fee associated with this course. Note: This course should not replace the grade nine PPL 1O course.
This course enables students to examine the factors that influence their own health practices and behaviours as well as those factors that contribute to the development of healthy communities. It emphasizes the concept of wellness, which addresses all aspects of well-being – physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social – and promotes healthy eating, physical activity, and building and maintaining a positive sense of self. Students will develop the skills necessary to make healthy choices and create a personal wellness plan. They will also design initiatives that encourage others to lead healthy, active lives. The course prepares students for college programs in health sciences, fitness, wellness, and health promotion.
