Monthly Academic Focus

'Monthly Academic Focus' will contain information about what we are currently learning and discovering within each subject. This will constantly be changing as we move throughout our curriculum. We will be integrating subjects into each other (working cross-curricular) as a way to delve deeper into each subject and explore the real-world applications (e.g., health topics in drama, science in language, math in science). 

Math:
We will be exploring math using Big Ideas rather than going unit by unit. This allows the students to dig deeper into each concept, explore real-world connections, and have multiple opportunities to practice throughout the year.

• Monthly Focus: Fractions: Whole numbers, mixed numbers, and fractional amounts:

• Represent and solve fair-share problems that focus on determining and using equivalent fractions, including problems that involve halves, fourths, and eighths; thirds and sixths; and fifths and tenths 

Language:

• Reading: Reading comprehension strategies, including parts of speech

• Writing: Organization, word choice

Physical Education: 

• Movement skills, game structure, rules and guidelines, conventions of fair play and etiquette for floor hockey

Health: Mme. Day 

• Personal Safety and Injury Prevention 

Visual Art: 

• Element of Design: 

  • Shape and Form (composite shapes, symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes and forms in both the human-made environment and natural world)

Science:
