ROBOTICS TEAM 5870

Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School Robotics Team is called League of Logic and the FRC number is 5870.

The robotics extracurricular team takes students from grade 9 to 12 to compete in a international robotics competition called FIRST.

What is FIRST:

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the varsity sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

Quick Facts:

• When does the team start: September usually second week of school. Pay attention to morning announcements.
• When does the team end: The season runs until 1st week June.
• Commitment Level: Weekly meeting at lunch but students are expected to come to a after school meeting. There is typically two after school meetings a week (after school to 5 pm) and this tends to ramp up in January and February to three meetings after school or weekends. As FIRST competition only gives 6 weeks to finish a 6ft, 120 lb robot.

How Do You Join?

• Come by room 129 and talk to Mr. K. McKay
• No knowledge is required to join the team, there is no expectation of pre-existing knowledge of robotics or previous experience required from another robotics program such as (Jr. FLL, FLL or Computer programming), or Construction/Transportation background.

When Can I Join?

• Best time is at the start of the year in September, but we can take new members up to last week November or 1st week of December.
  • After that unfortunately training has occurred, safety has already been started so by second semester we are strictly in full steam build.

Time Commitments:

• Please note that this is a extremely intensive extracurricular activity. It runs from September to June, with some periods were the students will be at school until 10 pm two or three nights a week, and may also require a commitment on the weekend especially during the six week period.
