Hello Royal Roads Families!
This website is designed to support you and your child by providing quality go-to site links and lesson ideas that you might want to explore at home. In September of 2023 a new Ontario French Language curriculum was released. The expectations for this curriculum are organized into 4 interrelated groups (e.g., listening, speaking, reading, and writing) which overlap and strengthen each other. As your child's French teacher, I plan to create a series of fun, meaningful learning experiences that will expose your child to French vocabulary in context and give your child plenty of opportunities to hear and use the French language so that your child becomes better at comprehending the written and spoken language and more comfortable speaking French. Daily oral activities will connect with expectations in all four strands. Activities might include:
building pictures that correspond with oral or written descriptions (e.g., make a poster advertisement that describes a lost pet)
getting exercise and learning French through Quality Daily Physical Activities
participating in shared reading activities (e.g., echoing phrasing and expression)
responding in interactive games and role-plays (e.g., simulate telephone conversations)
Looking forward to working with you,
Sandra Captein

Curriculum Overview
Listening
using listening comprehension strategies
striving to comprehend oral French texts about every day topics and learn about French-speaking communities in Ontario and Quebec
responding with understanding to what others say
Example: After participating in a class-wide "Would You Rather" game, students learned some French vocabulary as they created game questions and played the game again using their own questions.
Speaking
express themselves clearly and coherently in French with a smooth pace, appropriate intonation, and accurate pronunciation about personal and familiar topics using teacher models and supports
plan steps to improve their speaking skills
Example: Students were introduced to 9 colour words and then, played a scavenger hunt game! In this game, students were put into small groups of 3-4. One student pronounced a randomly chosen colour word out of a cup and their group members quickly flipped through books in order to be the first one to find that colour.
Reading
use reading comprehension strategies to understand and demonstrate an understanding of French texts
read texts containing familiar words and expressions at a sufficient rate and with sufficient ease
Writing
write French texts for different purposes using the stages of the writing process
