This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elements of drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will create, perform, discuss, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.

Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences.

This course requires students to create and perform in dramatic presentations. Students will analyse, interpret, and perform dramatic works from various cultures and time periods. Students will research various acting styles and conventions that could be used in their presentations, and analyse the functions of playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and audiences.

Students will investigate the art of theatre design and technology to transform and create new realities. They will learn to work individually and cooperatively using the creative and critical analysis processes unique to the performing arts. They will create and analyse set, costume, sound, properties, and lighting designs. Students will learn about transforming environments into performance spaces as well as recycling and reutilizing materials for various theatrical purposes.
Working as an integral part of a design team, students will create and present shared stage design concepts such as concept sketches, collages, and coloured renderings. They will develop both their individual and collective identities as they explore the field of theatre design, learn to respect theatre protocols, and understand the interconnected roles of designers in theatre.

This course requires students to experiment individually and collaboratively with forms and conventions of both drama and theatre from various cultures and time periods. Students will interpret dramatic literature and other texts and media sources while learning about various theories of directing and acting. Students will examine the significance of dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyse how the knowledge and skills developed in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness, and goals beyond secondary school.
Prerequisite: Drama, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
Production: This specialised course focuses on creating theatre for public audiences. Building on their previous drama training, this course will put into practice the students’ knowledge of how to plan, design and build the production from concept to clean-up. Students will learn and apply knowledge of theatre technology (lighting design, scenic design, costume design, etc.) in order to support the performers as well as the audience experience.
Acting: In this specialised course, students will focus on the development of their acting skills through the creation of a major theatrical performance. A variety of acting styles employed for different genres of theatre will be explored as students create and perform a major production. They will explore diverse theatrical forms and performance methods, while learning the art of mounting a full length play. Students will engage in leadership roles while applying theories of acting, directing, and performing for a wide range of audiences. Education and career opportunities will also be explored. This course package will include a series of workshops where students will have the opportunity to learn from and work with theatre professionals from the community.
