Our Teachers

About me:

Hello and welcome to the Social Sciences and Humanities website. My name is Tonya Rumas, and I am the Department Head of SSH. I have been at CECI since Feb. 2006. Previously, I taught Science at Clarke Road SS in London. Our department focus is to provide a welcoming, safe and fun environment for our students to learn.

The courses I normally teach at CECI are the Gr. 9 and Gr. 11 Foods courses, Gr. 11 Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology, and Gr. 12 Human Development throughout the Lifespan (a ‘Bio-Psych’ course). I am involved with Students’ Council, and like to help out with Track and Field.

My background includes Biochemistry and Psychology from McMaster and Human Nutrition from Acadia. Psychology, Biology and Nutrition are my passions.

I live in St. Thomas with my husband and 4 sons. My oldest graduated from CECI in 2020, I have a son in Gr. 10 at CECI, and my two youngest are in Grades 6 and 3 at Mitchell Hepburn Public school. We are involved with St. Thomas Minor Hockey, St. Thomas Minor Baseball, Optimist Softball, and volunteering within the Fire Department.

In my spare time I like to run, bike, swim, read, knit, and run our four boys to sports or work. 😉

Brian Barter

Mr. Barter brings a passion for social sciences and the humanities into the classroom. In his classes, he helps students to make connections between the key concepts in the social sciences and practical experiences in the world around them. Drawing upon his studies the University of Guelph, and York University, he encourages students to explore questions related to human behaviour, and the human experience using scientific methods and critical thinking.

In our kitchen, Mr. Barter introduces students to the fundamentals of safe food preparation, following recipes, and exploring a variety of foods and cultures, while encouraging students to build skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Mr. Barter holds a specialist designation in teaching the social sciences and geography, as well as qualifications in guidance and other family studies courses.

Originally from Toronto, Mr. Barter now resides in London, with his wife and two children. He loves what he does, and loves to see students succeed.
