Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH)

Students from all backgrounds, and with different destinations, benefit from Social Science and Humanities (SSH) courses (also known as Family Studies). Courses within SSH provide students with essential knowledge and transferable skills that they can apply in every aspect of their lives. SSH is cross-curricular, incorporating many different types of literacy: prose (reading about new findings in psychology), document literacy (accessing and using information in research), numeracy (calculating macro-nutrient percentages of food), and health literacy (disease prevention).

The SSH department will encourage students to build an understanding of how people live, how they think, and how they interact in the world around them. Authentic learning is a key component in all SSH courses. Students are encouraged to develop creative and critical thinking skills and are provided opportunities to apply to real life scenarios; such as the Baby Think it Over program, planning healthy meals for their families, shopping on a budget, comparison shopping, and creating their own garment and fashion products. The aim of the SSH department at CECI is to tie together school and community through field trips, conducting Social Science experiments (surveys and interviews), and welcoming guest speakers into the classroom (emergency services personnel, health nurses). We are proud to be teaming up with elementary students in our feeder schools to help develop and foster leadership skills.
