Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
There are three ways for a co-op student to be involved in OYAP while in high school:
If a student has a coop placement in any of the 144 trades in Ontario, the coop teacher will submit their information to the TVDSB OYAP Coordinator and the student will be entered into the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development (MLITSD) database.
If the placement fits with the student’s career path and the placement is willing and able to sponsor the student as an apprentice the student moves on to become a registrant. The student will have a Training Agreement (TA) generated for them by the TVDSB OYAP Coordinator through the coop teacher.
Important detail to proceed:
Students must have a social insurance number to be registered.
Placements must have a Sponsor ID number to be eligible to take on an apprentice.
Next steps:
Signing nights are in November and April where students come with a parent/guardian to meet with the MLITSD and sign the TA.
The student takes the TA back to the placement for a signature. They need to make sure they have the person responsible for signing TAs.
The student returns the TA to their co-op teacher
The TVDSB OYAP coordinator sends the completed TA to the MLITSD and once it is returned, with the MLITSD signature stamp, it is a Registered Training Agreement (RTA).
The student will then be given a copy of their RTA to keep for the duration of their apprenticeship.
The student should then go to www.skilledtradesontario.ca and register/login to the portal.
That portal access stays with them beyond high school and throughout their apprenticeship.
A Training Standards Logbook should be printed for their trade from the above website.
The student will begin to collect signatures as an apprentice to verify the skills they’ve covered.
All apprentices do this and that booklet stays with them throughout their apprenticeship.
Applications for Accelerated OYAP Level 1 will go out to schools in early October.

456A Welder
Important detail to proceed:
Accelerated OYAP Level 1 is an application program and does not have available spots for all students.
Not being accepted into the Accelerated OYAP program does not prevent the student for being able to continue on with their apprenticeship.
The Accelerated OYAP Level 1 students must be in placements that can train for the trade code of the Level 1 program.
Some trades do have a common core curriculum for Level 1 and that trade code would also be acceptable for their RTA (registered training agreement).
All students must have an RTA through their coop placement to attend the Level 1 classes.
Asking the placement if they have had an apprentice for the trade code is the simplest way to know. If unsure, ask the co-op teacher to check with the OYAP Coordinator.
