Our Word Work focus will begin on Monday, September 9th, 2019. Each week, the children will have 10 words. These words will always be posted on the website the Monday of each week, as well as written in your child's planner each Monday morning. During the week, students will participate in activities in class using these words (e.g., at literacy centres, during shared reading). Reviewing the words at home is also encouraged.
On Fridays, your child will have a word work quiz. Each word will be worth 1 mark. We are working on using only capital letters where necessary (e.g., we do not need to use a capital letter in the middle of a word, or even at the beginning of a word unless it is starting a sentence or is a proper noun (a specific person, place, or thing), as such on the word work quizzes, 1/2 mark will be deducted for such...I really want the students to develop good habits and by solidifying these skills now, we are working positively towards such. I also find that by doing mini quizzes now, students develop more confidence with test taking as the grades progress.
Each week, the words lists will be centered around a specific skill. For example, in Week One we will be focusing on short vowel sounds. The word lists contain both pattern words, as well as sight words. Some of the sight words also present regular spellings, but a number contain irregular spellings, that cannot be encoded phonetically and thus, need to be remembered through visual memory.
