STEAM Hub is a newer "specials" class offered to all students at GMMS (the exception is when a student is taking math remediation, he/she would attend that class rather than STEAM Hub). The course is an extension of the elementary Innovation special and serves as a bridge to the STEM offerings at the high school level.

STEAM Hub is a semester long class that meets twice in a 6-day cycle. The 8th graders have this class in the first semester while the 7th graders have it in the 2nd semester.

While the activities are different between the 7th and 8th grade, the mission of STEAM Hub in both grade levels is to prepare students for the future job market. We do this in two primary ways. One, we coach them in what we call "Future Ready Skills"; these include what is often referred to as "the 4Cs": collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. The second is we expose them to STEAM pathways and careers.

This class should be a really fun and enjoyable class for students! There's a lot of hands-on learning, opportunities to express their creativity, and lots of group work. Our classroom is generally pretty noisy and quite busy! In this class, I am more of a coach or a guide rather than a traditional instructor; this means students do more of the talking than I do! Another thing that is different in this course is our grading structure. I don't assign homework and I do not give tests. What I do do is assess their participation level during each class period; I determine on a scale of 1-4 (1 being a novice level and 4 being more of an advanced level) the effort they are putting into developing their future ready skills (collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication) through their participation in the day's activity. As mentioned, I serve more as a coach, so I provide feedback on how they are doing and how to improve as I visit with them during the activities. To encourage trying these new yet important skills, we do not assign a grade until the end of the marking period. At that time, I give them either a Pass (P) or a Fail (F) for the course. If a student is at risk of failing, I will make contact with parents and guardians to alert them of this around mid-semester, which is at the end of 1st quarter and 3rd quarter.
