For this semester all assignments are turned in via the above link. Once assignments are submitted (your Google Doc = copy #1) a new copy (copy #2) is produced - I am automatically the owner of copy #2. I will leave comments and your grade on this new copy and send you a notification when you can review it.

****NOTICE**** Please use Google Docs and Google Slides and NOT Microsoft Word and Powerpoint to complete assignments. Using Microsoft products is just fine in your day-to-day but these products do not completely integrate with Google tools. Keeping all document creation within Google ensures a smooth work flow. In some cases you may need to upload a PDF if you are making scans of notes, etc. In the case of photos - jpg/jpeg format is preferred.

4. Global Topics Essay Question

     1. • Essay Question: Global migration patterns are placing individuals with different cultural, spiritual, and ethnic backgrounds together within single nation states. Throughout your SST experience you have observed both: (i) how Indonesia addresses holding diverse cultural and religious traditions together in one nation (the salad approach - i.e. pancasila, etc.) and (ii) how Indonesian immigrants experience the American immigration system (immigration law and the "melting-pot" or "soup" approach). Critically evaluate both "the salad" and "the soup" approaches as models for assimilating different peoples within the context of human migration in an increasingly volatile world. Please highlight workable models for how people of very different backgrounds can get along and work together.

        • In your essay be sure to:

          1. Take into account different perspectives

          2. Demonstrate your understanding of multiple worldviews

          3. Describe the historical context that the global immigration system works within

          4. Apply your knowledge to address the complex, global issue of immigration

          5. Reference lectures, readings, and your own personal experience.

          6. Write clearly, concisely, and in an organized fashion to articulate your points.

Bahasa Indonesian Language Course (4 credits)

• The language teachers WITHIN Indonesia will assign a grade for this course. Your SST instructor of record (John) will then translate these grades from the Indonesian system to Goshen College’s system and this will be the grade that is entered on your Goshen College transcripts.

• Assignments are as assigned by your instructor in Indonesia

Cultural Perspectives: Indonesia (3 credits) .......this course is mainly focusing on your cultural experiences and inner journey during SST.

• Weekly Journal reflections (12)

  1. • 5 long-form Philly reflections = 30pts/each X 5 = 150pts total

     • 1 "special" Philly retrospective = 45 points

     • 6 short-form Indonesia reflections = 10pts/each X 6 = 60pts total

• Photo blog assignment (2) = 30pts/each X 2 = 60pts total

• Final oral narrative project: telling your story = 100pts

TOTAL = 515 points

Community Engaged Learning: Indonesia (3 credits) ......This course is mainly focusing on the service placement part of SST

• Formative Action Research Assignments (3) = 60pts

SST Integration Capstone (2 credits) - Completed back at Goshen College

• The SST director will assign a grade for this course; however it WILL include a final, capstone project - Rubric Here

Grading will be on the following scale for each of the academic courses:

93-100 percent A

90-92 percent A-

88-89 percent B+

83-87 percent B

80-82 percent B-

78-79 percent C+

73-77 percent C

68-69 percent D+

60-67 percent D

59 percent ↓ F

This percentage corresponds to the following grade categories and their accompanying definitions:

• |A = 94 to 100| --> Excellent job...has gone above and beyond expectations and provided an excellent product. All features are included and show exemplary mastery of the skill.

• |A- = 90 to 93 | --> Great job...still above expectations and all features are represented. Mastery is still evident but not quite as "above and beyond" as an "A"

• |B+= 87 to 89| --> Very good job...still slightly above basic expectations. All or most features are represented.

• |B = 84 to 86 | --> Good job...all basic expectations are met. This is a solid effort. Most features are represented.

• |B- = 80 to 83| --> Satisfactory job...all basic expectations are met and most features are represented. Still a solid answer but some slight omissions, lacking clarity, etc... - in need of a bit of polishing.

• |C+= 77 to 79| --> Meets most Expectations...most basic expectations are met and most features are represented. A mostly solid effort with some omissions, lack of clarity, and/or misconceptions - one or two minor skills absent and in need of polishing.

• |C = 74 to 76 | --> Meets many of Expectations...many basic expectations are met and many features are represented. This answer contains obvious omissions, lack of clarity, and/or misconceptions - some minor skills absent.

• |C- = 69 to 73| --> Needs Improvement...some basic expectations are met and some features are represented. Obvious omissions, lack of clarity, and/or misconceptions make answer difficult to understand and/or interpret - mostly minor skills absent and some major skills are shaky.

• |D = 60 to 68 | --> In Great Need of Improvement...a few basic expectations are met and a few features are represented. Obvious omissions, lack of clarity, and/or misconceptions make answer largely incorrect and difficult to follow - major skills are absent.
