General Information:

School day structure:

School begins at 8:55 and finishes at 3:45 Monday to Thursday and 1:15 on Friday. There is a 20 minute morning break and 30 minutes in the afternoon for lunch.

Transport:

The school is serviced by Bus Eireann for students in the catchment area. There are a number of private bus providers currently offering transport to Gortnor Abbey. Parents/Guardians can make contact with those business as follows:

Canteen:

There is an optional canteen facility on site which offers a selection of hot and cold foods five days a week.

Lockers:

Students are assigned lockers at the beginning of the school year. Each year group has their own designed resource area with their lockers.

Mentors:

Each 1st year student is assigned a mentor. Mentors are senior cycle students whose role is to assist first year students to settle in to life in Gortnor Abbey.

Communication:

The school uses a management information system called Vsware. Each parent will get a username which will provide access to their son/daughter's school profile including access to their timetable, attendance, term reports and behaviour.

The school also has a school app for communicating information to parents and students. Parents are encouraged to download the school app once they have enrolled their son/daughter. You can also access Vsware through the school app or through or main website: https://gortnorabbey.app.vsware.ie/




New Junior Cycle Parent Information

The New Junior Cycle:

The Junior Cycle was introduced in 2014 on a phased basis which features revised subjects, a focus on key skills and new approaches to assessment and reporting.

In Gortnor Abbey students study 7 core subjects and 3 option subjects:

Core subjects:

English, Irish, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education.

Options subjects:

Music, Art, Home Economics, Business Studies, French, German, Wood Technology, Technology, Technical Graphics.

Liturgy:

As a co-educational Catholic school we celebrate a number of liturgical services throughout the academic year. These occasions give us a chance to come together as a school community.


Additional Needs:

Gortnor Abbey is an inclusive school where we strive to cater to the needs of all students. Our SEN team will reach out to the parents of students with diagnosed learning difficulties to begin the process of planning for transition to post primary.
