They asked Mr. Toppan Robie to go to Boston to buy a bell and to bring it back to Gorham. 

“Mr. Robie,” the people said, “We want a bell that will be just right for our church. It must not ring too loudly. It must not ring too softly. It must sound like pretty music. It must not cost more than five hundred dollars.”
