Class Discipline Policies and Procedures

Our goal is to provide a safe atmosphere where every student can meet his or her full potential. In order to accomplish this goal, the students absolutely must use appropriate behavior. A discipline plan has been put in place to help provide that ideal environment for your child.

This year we will be using a “gold card” as our discipline system. Your child will begin each six weeks with a conduct grade of 100. Two points will be subtracted from that for each warning per six weeks that your child receives, and 5 points for each hole punch. Gold cards will only be handed out for students who receive a warning or hole punch. Students are given a verbal warning before a warning is written on the gold card. A hole punch will be given after the warning, or for a larger offence. Each student may only get 1 warning per day. After that, even if the offence is minor the student will receive a hole punch for not following directions or disobeying a rule. If a student receives 2 hole punches in one week, he/she will no longer be given the chance of a warning after that for the week. He/she will get a hole punch for the third offence. For example if a student received a warning on Monday and Wednesday, and then had a minor offence on Thursday, a hole punch would be given on Thursday instead of a warning. Study hall is also available for students who need more reminders about the expectations here at school. Two points could also be taken off a student’s conduct grade if he/she has received study hall for a disciplinary issue.

There are some actions that will result in an automatic hole punch (without a warning). These include being disrespectful, fighting, stealing, using inappropriate language, cheating, and lying.

Should a student receive a hole punch and continue to make poor choices, he/she will be referred to Mrs. Campbell for further disciplinary action.

The gold card system will also be used when a child does not turn in his/her work homework. Most days, if your child utilizes his/her time in class, homework will be minimal. However if he/she does not use her time wisely in class, he/she should expect homework. Of course there will be times when extra practice is needed, and more homework may be given. If homework is not returned the following day or on the given due date, a “freebie” (no points off conduct grade) will be given the first time each six weeks. After one freebie, a hole punch will be given for not returning homework. The student may also have to go to lunchtime study hall to do the assignment.

You will see on your child’s gold card if he/she has received a warning or hole punch for the week (a letter will also be sent home if a hole punch is given). The gold card will be in his or her planner during the week, but please do not sign it until the following Tuesday when you see it in the Tuesday folder. That way the teacher will know that you saw it after the entire week was complete.

The first week of school is a practice week. No points will be deducted from your child’s conduct grade this week. However the teachers will be telling the students what would be a warning or a hole punch starting next week so that all students will know what to expect.

Having said all that, please know that we have very high hopes for this group of students!! They are great kids and have an immense amount of potential!! They set the tone and are the example for the rest of our campus, and what a great example they can be!!!!! We are looking forward to a fantastic year!

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about our discipline system.

General Classroom Information

Attendance

Gordon is striving for good attendance. Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. When your child has been absent you must send a note with your child the first day they return explaining the absence.

Behavior System for 1st Grade

In order to assure that your child is having the most positive experience they can, we want to work with you in helping your child develop the skills necessary to be successful. Below is the discipline code for 1st grade.

Behavior chart: The chart has three colors beginning with green at the top followed by yellow and red.

Green - Ready to Learn! All students begin the day on “Ready to Learn”. They can move up or down during the day depending on the choices they make.

Yellow - Think About It!! Students move to “Think About It” as a reminder that they need to follow the classroom rules. (Written Warning on the gold card)

Red - Parent Contact!! Students who move to “Parent Contact” sit out during recess or free time and reflect on their choice. A note will be sent home to be signed by a parent. Student/Teacher conference will be used to discuss behavior and work on changing it.

*If inappropriate behavior continues a parent/teacher conference or trip to the principal’s office may take place.* (gold card hole punch)

In the student folder you will find a calendar, the student will color in the color that they ended the period on. (They will color for each class period. So there will be a color for math, ELA, and science and social studies.) Please talk with them about their choices and initial their calendar daily. A “Gold Card” will ONLY be given if the student gets a warning or hole punch.

**Points off “Gold Cards” may be taken depending on what the student did. They will have the same gold card for ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. (Please review the Gold Card note to see consequences.)

Birthdays

Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If you would like, you may bring STORE BOUGHT treats for the class on his/her birthday. I would ask you to please send a note a few days prior to the special occasion, so I can give you the number of students in the class and to set aside some class time for the celebration. Again, NO homemade goodies are allowed!!!

Communication

Each day your child will bring home their homework notebook. The notebook will contain a conduct sheet, monthly cafeteria menus, homework, graded papers, and important notes. Please initial and return daily.

Conferences

My conferences time is from 1:00-1:45 each day. If you would like to schedule a conference, you can contact me at 254-693-5582, e-mail me at

dday@gordonhorns.net, or send a note in your child’s home work notebook. I will get back to you at my earliest convenience.

Departure

If your child is going home in a different way than previously arranged then we must have a WRITTEN and DATED note from home or a phone call. Please do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children occasionally become confused and relay the message incorrectly. This is for the safety of the student.

Homework: Homework should be a habit that begins in our early grades. Students will have math, spelling and reading (fluency) homework daily. Your child will receive a weekly homework grade.

Money

On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Please place money in the zip lock bag provided in his/her folder and a note with the following information on it.

1. Your child’s first and last name

2. The amount of money

3. The purpose for the money (lunch, book fair, etc.).

4. My name- Mrs. Day

This is a tremendous help to reduce the likelihood of errors.

Report Cards

Report cards will be sent out at the end of each six weeks. Report cards should be signed and returned the next day. If you have any question please feel free to contact me at 254-693-5582, e-mail me at dday@gordonhorns.net, or send a note in your child’s notebook and a conference will be scheduled.

Timeliness

School begins at 7:55 a.m. and the tardy bell rings at 7:50 a.m. If the student arrives after the bell then he/she is considered tardy.

Toys

Students are not allowed to bring toys to school. For any exceptions, a note will be sent home.

I am looking forward to a fantastic year!!

Thank you,
