Woodland Walk

The Woodland Walk is part of the Royal Crescent Allotment in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil.  It was opened in 2015 by creating a walk and a pond in an area of a dozen or so plots that had been abandoned and overgrown over more than four decades.  The trees are now well established and over the years we have built a pathway through them, added picnic benches, erected a cabin used for resting and talking with more picnic benches nearby.  Most of the more common trees are identified by a notice but these are not obtrusive. It is an area to enjoy and to listen to the birds.

At the top end of the Walk our allotment members and schoolchildren have put up bug hotels and filled tyres and planting areas with flowers and herbs.  We have acquired some outdoor picnic furniture and we have a polytunnel and greenhouse to be used by interested parties, there's also a newly developed sensory garden area.

Included in our guided visits are beehives overseen by one of our members who is a qualified beekeeper.  Visitors are welcome to call in to experience what we do in our other plots, one of which uses solar energy to oxygenate the goldfish.  Other plots are more conventional, growing vegetables and some flowers. Some members rear chickens and will be pleased to show you around.  Most have a greenhouse or a polytunnel to extend the growing season.

Our programme for schools and groups can be tailor-made for the age and educational/social requirements of their leaders.  Some of our guides have a teaching background and appreciate the nature of the National Curriculum. However our main aim is for the visit to be enjoyable in an area that we think is a hidden gem.

We are pleased that the Woodland Walk has been awarded a Green Flag by Keep Wales Tidy in 2016 - 2022.
