Dear GPA Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to our 6th Grade English and History classroom! My name is Sarah Youngren. I will be your child's English and History teacher for the year. I'm very excited to be working with you and your student. I am excited to be back in the classroom with your child. We are going to have a fun and safe time learning on campus!

It is my philosophy that we are a team working together to build a strong foundation of academic and emotional growth for your child. As we navigate being back in the classroom, remember we are in this together! I am here to support you. Here are some tips that I find to be helpful!

7 Tips for Parents

Make sure the learner is on time, ready, and prepared to learn every day.

Make sure student's school supplies are prepared the night before.

Make sure the student has dressed appropriately and in GPA attire before coming to school.

Know your child’s schedule, start time, and his or her teachers.

Follow-up at the end of the day.

i) How did you do today? ii) Did we meet our goals? iii) What did you learn today?

iv) See if they finished the assignments or not

Keep in contact with the teachers

  1. PowerSchool for Parents, monitor

  2. Monitor daily progress, making sure students are getting their assignments turned in.

Please keep in mind; I understand the working schedule. It can feel a bit overwhelming, but that is okay! All you need to do to keep track of these tips is to ask your child. Your student should be the ones on top of it.

We will use Zoom and other conferencing and virtual meeting platforms during distance learning to deliver class meetings, homework, assessments, projects, and much more to our students every day. In our classroom, the practice of teaching both the skills of the standards-based curriculum and higher-level thinking skills reinforce each other and facilitate more profound levels of knowledge for all learners. My primary source for assignments will be on Google Classroom, but we will use a few different websites to enrich the learning experience. These can be found under the resources section and syllabi.

Parents and students will be able to access off-campus learning opportunities through our Google Classroom page. Parents should have their login information, as Google Classroom will be the primary platform for the distribution of weekly assignments.

Expectations for Students

  1. Make sure your surroundings are appropriate for school.

  2. Leave a respectful digital footprint by not sharing embarrassing, illegal, or inappropriate content.

  3. Adhere to the GPA Code of Conduct handbook

  4. Adhere to the GPA Technology Use Policy (pg. 17)

  5. Adhere to GPA culture, non-negotiable, REACH values, and core beliefs.

  6. Complete and turn in assignments on time

Parents, if your child is ill and will not be able to participate for the day, please email the attendance office at attendance@gomperscharter.org and me at syoungren@gomperscharter.org.

Thank you for your commitment to your child's education. I am excited to work with you and your child this school year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Youngren

About me

My name is Sarah Youngren. This is my fourth year teaching at Gompers Preparatory Academy (GPA) as the 6th grade English and History teacher. Prior to teaching at GPA, I taught fourth grade in Los Angeles.

Originally born and raised in Canada, I moved to San Diego as a teenager. Since then, I’ve been living in California and enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery. In my free time, I love creating stories! There is so much magic in a story.

My other passion, besides teaching, is writing science fiction/fantasy novels. If I’m not writing, I might be working out or watching The Office, Psych or Community (anything comedy related).
