Open up your web browser go to screencast-o-matic.com
Once on the homepage, click on the red “Launch Free Recorder” button.
You’ll see a popup that says “Launching Recorder” and in the left hand corner of your browser you will see a file called “WebLaunchRecord”, Click on that file to run it.
It may take around 10 seconds for the recorder to launch but once it does you will see a translucent window with resizable handles pop up on your screen.
You can resize this window by clicking and dragging on the handles to cover as much or as little of the screen as you’d like.
In the bottom left hand corner of the recording window, click on the settings gear.
Here you will be presented with the option to record the screen only, Your webcam only, or both. Notice the MAX Time says 15 minutes. This is because the free version of Screencast o matic has a limitation of 15 minutes to record your video, but don’t worry, you can record as many times as you like!
There is a volume meter next to the Narration so you can test out your microphone and below that is the computer audio section. Because we are using the free version, You will not be able to record any sound from your computer, only the sound coming from a microphone you have plugged in.
Next to the settings gear is a red Record button. Click this when you get ready to start your screen recording.
When you start your screen recording, the program will count down to let you know it’s about to begin recording.
To stop your screen recording, click on the Pause button in the bottom left hand corner of the recording window.
Next to the red recording button you now have a play button. You can use this to playback what you’ve recorded or you can click on the Red recording button to continue recording if you’d like.
If you’d like to start over, click on the Trashcan icon next to the done button.
If you’re done with your recording, click on the Done button on the far right hand side of the recording menu.
When you click Done, you’ll be given the option to Edit the video with the built in video editor, or Save/upload the video to YouTube, Google Drive, or to the local computer if you wish.
In the video editor, click on the handles to the left or right of the video clip to cut out unwanted portions of your video.
When you’re done editing, an options menu will appear with the ability to save the video as a file on your computer, upload the video to screencast o matic, or upload to youtube.
For future use, when you get ready to use Screencast O Matic again, I’d recommend going into your downloads folder where you downloaded the video launcher, right click on the “WebLaunchRecorder” file, mouse over “Send to” and click “Desktop (create shortcut). This will let you launch screencast o matic without having to browse to the website every time you wish the use the program. Just click on the shortcut you created on your desktop with the red record button.
