Uploading Files To Google Drive

The Drag & Drop Method

  • Open up Google Drive in a web browser.
  • Open up File Explorer on your computer and find the file or folder you want to upload.
  • Simply drag the file or folder into the window that Google Drive is open in, and release (Drop) the file into the window. You can select a specific folder to upload the file to by hovering your mouse over the folder.
  • Your file will then be uploaded into the Drive.

Upload From Within Drive Method

  • Open up Google Drive in a web browser.
  • Click on the blue “NEW” button in the top left hand corner of the browser window.
  • Click on “File Upload” to upload a single file or “Folder Upload” to upload an entire folder from your computer.
  • Choose the file or folder you wish to upload from your File Explorer.
  • Click on the “Open” button to begin the upload.

Sharing Files With Google Drive

Share A File From Within Google Drive

  • Open up Google Drive in your web browser.
  • Find the file or folder you’d like to share in Google Drive and right click on it.
  • From the popup menu click on the “Share” button.
  • Select the file permissions you’d like to give the person you’re sharing the file with by clicking on the permissions button located to the right of the email address entry box.
  • The three permission types you can give someone are as follows:
    • Can Edit - This person can edit whatever file you share with them however they cannot delete the file!
    • Can Comment - This person can view and comment on the file you’ve shared with them but cannot make any changes to the file.
    • Can View - Someone can view the file you’ve shared with them but cannot comment or edit the file in any way.
  • Enter in the email address/addresses of the person/people you’d like to share the file with.
  • Once you’ve entered in an email address a box will appear allowing you to type a note to the people you’ve shared the file with if you wish.
  • Once you’re done, click Send.

Share A File Using A Link

  • Open up Google Drive in your web browser.
  • Find the file or folder you’d like to share in Google Drive and right click on it.
  • From the popup menu click on the “Share” button.
  • Click on the link button in the top right hand corner of the share window next to “Get shareable link”
  • Click on the sharing permissions box underneath the “Link sharing on” heading to choose the appropriate permissions for the link you’ve created.
  • Located at the bottom of the permissions menu there is a “More” button. Click this to change the global permissions of the link itself.
  • Click on the down arrow in the “Access:” menu to change permissions for those who’ve been granted access to the file with a link.
  • You can choose from “View” “Comment” or “Edit” rights.
  • Click on the blue “Save” button at the bottom to save the changes.
  • To share the link, copy the link using the “Copy link” button and share the link in an email, Google Doc, text message, etc.
